I've been trying to make plant hangers with hemp cord but the patterns I found were for polypropylene cord and they're not turning out so great. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What I do is make 4 or 5 long lengths of hemp 'bracelets'.... using a square knot or spiral knot, long enough to measure from where I want to hang it to the top of the pot. The extra lengths of hemp (make sure there's about 12" or so) are tied together using square knots about 3" away from end of bracelet, ie outer threads from 'bracelet' #1 tie to #2, then #2 to 3, 3 to 4, and 4 back to 1 so it forms a circle. These square knots will sit alongside the pot. Make a few more square knots, spacing them about 2 or 3 inches below the last. At the end, get all your strings and tie one big knot. This will form the bottom of your basket and hold your plant in. Does that make sense? This macrame hanger is on a bigger scale of what I'm talking about, but kind of the same jist... you get the idea of what the body should look like.
Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks. Just a few questions, how do you attach the 'bracelets' to the ring and from your experience does tying one big knot on the bottom stay really good? By the way, that's a beautiful plant hanger.
you mean the ring at the top? I've never done that, that by the way is just a pic I found online but illustrates what I mean. I've always tied a secure knot at the top and at the bottom combining all my threads and tying as tightly as possible... so far it hasn't broken or fallen apart!
if you wanted the ring, I would fasten it into the "bracelet". Meaning, if you were using 4 strands to braid with, I would instead use 2 really long (double long, basically) strands, and fold them in half with the ring running through the middle... and then braid from there, with the ring "trapped" in the bracelet before the first twist or stitch or whatever you call it.
Thanks for the ideas. Just one question though, do you mean to pull hemp cords through the ring before braiding or make the the bracelets first then attach to the ring?
