I don't really think this is a cult film but i really loved it, everything about was beautiful and unique. The story was simple but was alot of fun. I wish Sophia Coppola would make more movies. Virgin Suicides was great too

I liked it, I didn't like the way it made fun of Japanese people

The film is not making fun of anything in my opinion, especially not the Japanese, it's rather in fact a tribute to them!! The people are not portrayed as stoopid, only very different. At the same time, the beauty and uniqueness in their culture is underlined clearly. For me it gave indeed a much richer and nuanced picture of Japanese people than I'd had before, which can only be positive!

Also, in every other way... it's simply the greatest movie I've ever seen.

I agree with ginger 100%, the movie showed how you can be so overwhelmed when traveling abroad you can become lost, I think I loved the movie so much because it wasn't just some romance story, it was just a friendship formed by two people "lost" in Japan. It definetly was one of the greatest movies I've ever seen.

Hmmm... When I first saw it I thought that... then later I saw another version that went longer, I think it could have been the directors cut. They didn't hook up or anything, but there was definitely more sexual tension in the second version I saw.

I don't remember it too well because it's been a while, but what I do remember is fantastic, and it was a great movie. All the Engrish in the movie was brilliant. What was that once scene during the photo shoot, the photographer was trying to say "frank sinatra' I think, right? But it came out sounding absolutely foreign. Funny shit.

Yeah but if you watch the film a little closely it shows a wide array of elements in their culture. Like some said before the sheer beauty, diversity and difference in their way of life is captured.

We only see what we allow ourselves to see.
