    Hey all...

    Question for you athletic types:

Are knee problems common for Kiwis later in life? From what I saw, lots of kiwis do their PE stuff barefoot? When I was in Auckland, I even saw a group of school-kids running on the concrete...

I'm a fairly avid runner and a fairly avid barefooter... But, my knees do sometimes bother me. Do you think it would be unwise to try a couple of miles barefoot?

You might get tetanus. No idea about the knee thing though.

When I was younger I use to love running barefoot cos shoes were too heavy for me and my feet could handle it aswell, thats proably why they do it.
I dont suggest you run a couple of miles barefoot in all honesty, it'll cause shin splints and generally fuck your knees up way more, y not try changing your shoes, get more shock absorbant ones or run on a treadmill, it absorbs most of the shock while your running and takes alot of pressure off your knees

thanks 8foot... I've decided I think I'll stick to running in comfortable shoes and saving the barefooting for a walking pace.

BTW... where and what is H-Town?? Hamilton maybe?

don't run barefoot on pavement or concrete, because it is indeed bad for your knees. on grass or dirt, not so much.

as for shoes, make sure you go to a running store and have them analyze your stride, arch, etc. otherwise that too can be bad for your knees.

especially if you're logging a ton of miles.

If you are a good weight and exercise regulalry rather than sporadically then barefoot running is no problem unless you have some unfortunate genetic vulnerability.
