My sister acquired a kitten and didn't take care of it very well, so I took him from her and now he's under my care. I think he's about four months old now. I'm curious, how much should I let the kitten eat? Every time I set food out, he'll eat it all..almost in one sitting...it's about two cups of food total. I think this might partly be due to the fact that sometimes she wouldn't feed him, so when she did feed him, he had to eat it quickly not knowing when he'll be fed again. (Although, this is just a theory.) I don't want to feed him too much because I don't want him to get sick, but I also want to feed him enough so he grows and lives happily. I've, personally, never had an inside cat before, we've always had barn cats, so sorry if I sound pathetic here LOL.
Most cats are not like dogs in that they tend to be OK with dry food just sitting out for them all the time....they won't eat and eat and eat. Most cats can eat like that without a problem. They will eat a little then go back later and eat a little more. I have two cats and three kittens right now and with them I just leave food out for them and they eat when they want. I've never had a problem. but if he was starving at his previous home then that may be a different situation. If he wasn't getting any food before now then I would ask a vet.
Kittens must have food unlimited, it'll be reduced as he gets older. We have 8 kittens and 7 cats, the kittens and mama have food out for them all the time, and the elders have set mealtimes.
kittens should have a full bowl all the time. for the first six months at least. he'll eventually realize that the food isn't going to disappear and it will be replenished regularly. his eating habits will settle in and he'll eat when he's hungry, and not gulp everything like there's no tomorrow. do take him to the vet. he could be seriously malnourished and may need some extra supplements. he needs his shots anyway, too.
