i recently found some indian pipe while i was hiking and remember hearing somewhere it had hallucinogenic propertiesi didnt pick any b/c its a rare species and would rather preserve it than trip off it but i was just curious if anyone knew anything about it or if they could point me to a resource i couldnt find anything on erowid or the lyceaum any replies appreciated
try a forums search....i posted a similar question a few years ago, and didn't get a positive response. its one of many herbs that, according to what you might call folk wisdom, has some sort of psychoactive effect...but if it does knowledge of it (and more importantly, of it's preparation) is extremely hard to come by. iirc, ellis could not direct me to any good information but knew OF someone who might have known something about it. an interesting topic, like many, but one you're not likely to find the answer to online. perhaps in an obscure book, or if you ask the right people you might be able to find something out. very likely you might be disappointed, though. this plant seems to be something of an enigma....
It's Monotropa uniflora on erowid. The only experience is at http://www.erowid.org/experiences/exp.php?ID=35999 .
do a google search on the scientific name and you'll find some information about the plant in general, from a botanical point of view. you won't see much related to drug use, though, except for some comments about it being used as a sedative and/or opium substitute a long time ago. nothing about dosage, safety, effects, or anything.....
thanks for the replies everyone i search for it on google and like you said nesta all i found was that its a sedative and antispasmodic but no finds on dosage or preparation, looks like im off to the many bookstores in my area to find an answer
good luck but dont have your hopes set too high. even if it works as a psychoactive drug (just because it's reported that it does doesn't mean its true....old remedies/medicines are funny that way....some of them just flat out didn't work) theres not going to be a consistant source of this stuff. it cannot be practically cultivated, being entirely parasitic and non-photosynthetic. the only times you're likely to find it is if you happen to find some in the woods by chance. i've spent a hell of a lot of time outdoors hiking, canoeing, camping, and all that fun stuff, and i only remember once or twice ever noticing a plant that could possibly have been this plant. the one time i specifically remember was when my family and i were in a very dark part of a dense forest, a bit turned around on the trail and slightly lost. we were amazed to find a tiny, pure white flower, and had no idea what it was or how it survived. now i think it was probably indian pipe, but at the time it mystified us..... really a remarkable organism, but not practical for recreational use even if it is active.
