I just got all my wisdom teeth removed and they stuck me on Vicodin until the end of the week. I asked about my breastfeeding and they said wait for the week to be up. Well, I've tried to be off the vicodin so I can feed her but I'm in so much pain. I'm now pumping and dumping and going through that teary time where it feels like your done breastfeeding(which I'm not). Grrr...Its killing me. I feel like such a psycho. I can't even close my mouth I'm so swollen and I haven't eaten in two days. I really wish I knew all this and my dentist would have waited until I stopped breastfeeding to remove them. I just feel so angry no one warned me ahead of time I'd have to stop BFing. I even specifically asked. I knew I wouldn't for that day and pumped milk for then... but my dentist knew! I've been questioning it for days before I went in to get it done and they never told me not to breastfeed until they were done and handing me care instructions and a prescription. Does anyone know of any STRONG painkiller I can take and still BF? I feel like such a coward I can't take this pain so she can BF. And on top of that I'm so angry at my dentist. My teeth weren't even close to being impacted so there was no huge rush the surgeon had told me... BTW I've tried advil... doesn't help.
Codeine should be safe for your baby, she's over 3 months now. Possible side effects are constipation.
When I had my daughter they gave me percocet I believe, because I tore and was in a lot of pain. I was BFing so I would assume that would be okay.
They offered me tylenol 3 (which is tylenol with codeine I believe) or percocet at the hospital after I had my second baby. I'm assuming that means they would be safe while nursing. I didn't take them so I don't know how they would affect the baby though.
they hospital I had Leane at also offered me the tylenol 3s with kodene because of the wicked episiotimy I had to have done. I don't know what I would have done without them! It still hurt AFTER I took them, but it really really took the edge off.
well it turns out I've started to get an infection and the swelling is ridiclous so I def need some meds
I wish I had seen this earlier. VICODIN IS FINE! I took it for migriane, a LOT, while nurisng all my kids. It is OKed by the AAP, it is stronger than codiene, and it won't hurt the baby. Narcotic pain meds are LARGE molecues and they do not get into milk in any quanitity. They won't hurt a newborn, we put mamas who had C sections for Preterm babies in MORPHINE and they can nurse. Vicodin is not a problem, take if if you need it, there is NO neeed to pump and dump.
And I would be VERY angry at your dentist. He should have access to Medications in Mother's Milk, just like those of us who never went to Medical or Dental School do, and know it is a better resource than the PDR, which is USLESS for breastfeeding. I'd talk to a local LC and have this guy reported. He committed malpractice by telling you not to breastfeed. Now take that Vicodin, take the antibiotics (they are safe, too, unless they are Tetracycline and any doc prescribing Tetra in this day and age needs his licence pullled) and nurse that baby. You are gonna be OK. YOu can also MIX about 600 mgs of Ibuprofen (every 6 hours) with the Vicodin and it will give it a pain killing boost, a safe one. Take a deep breath. Take your meds, and try to relax. You and the baby are going to be fine. Take care, honey.
for future reference, never believe a doc who says you can't breastfeed while taking any medication. They are just covering their asses because they don't know any better. Always check with Dr. Hale's book or his website http://neonatal.ama.ttuhsc.edu/lact/ or at least call a LC who has his book to look it up for you instead. And remember that the amount in your breastmilk is usually the same concentration as drug in your bloodstream, so baby ingests that and what actually makes it into baby's bloodstream is very minimal and usually not enough to even be measured!
