I will be taking my first trip to Amsterdam on the above dates. I will be traveling with a group of my family who will not be into the more liberal side of things at all, so I will be spending some quality time alone.

It seems from other posts, that walking alone in the city should be pretty safe, but are there any suggestions, ideas, or warnings that I should be aware of prior to my adventure.

Keep you wits about you, avoid the pushers on the bridges, and don't be surprised if some of your family are doing the exact same thing you are doing... taking "walks" to the nearest coffeshop! ;)

I'm sure you know your family better than anyone else here in this forum so don't listen to the assumption that they could be going to the coffeeshops... dontcha just hate it when people make assumptions? lol

Just go, enjoy yourself, don't worry about running into your family in the coffeeshops and if you need to know prices, check out the websites of the places/museums you want to go to. They usually always have the prices there and plan on waiting in a pretty long line, especially the Van Gogh. If you're sure you want to go there, it's best to buy tickets in advance because they come out and let the people with tickets go in even if you're at the end of the usually looong line.

I found out ALOT by searching the net. Google is great for that. If you get a chance to go to Amnesia coffeeshop, do. It's a GREAT place to just sit and chill and right around the corner from there is Grey Area which has unparalleled bud and Puccini chocolatiers is across the street from that (if you like dark chocolate, this is the place for you!).

If you want to see more of the culture and locals, go to Tweede Kamer coffeeshop. It's SO cool and they have places to sit outside so you can watch the world go by... it's simply heaven on earth with some of the best bud in A'dam. Go to the other threads when we still had signatures and see the coffeeshop map made by NEMESIS which will get you everywhere you need to go RE: coffeeshops in the dam and print it out. It will help you IMMENSELY. I've heard and read much in this forum about staying away from the Bulldog coffeeshops as they are too commercialized and definitely not the best bud. I passed by them and didn't even go in.

Take in one of the open markets if you can, they're amazingly cool with tons of fresh stuff, including things you can take home with you. I bought some old but beautiful Christmas ornaments from Czechoslovakia (when it was still called that lol), not to mention some wonderfully tasty homemade cookies, crackers, etc...

If you're into the nightclub scene try Dampkring, it's owned by the same people as Tweede Kamer... quality bud and a fun place from what I hear but I've never been there myself.

Have a blast and let us know how it was!

    Peace,
    islandgurl :)

Thank you for the information. I appreciate you taking to the time to reply.

As for the family visiting coffee shops, If i see my 80 year old Mom smoking a joint, I will most likley lay off the space cakes for the remainder of my visit. LOL

I hope to have connection during my stay, and I will be happy to provide updates on my trip.

The Tweeder Kamer has never had seats outside, infact be careful, just stepping out the front door puts you in the bike path.

The Dampkring is not a nightclub. But some people do stop off there before heading to the late night clubs. It is open till 1AM Sunday-Thursday and 2AM Friday & Saturday. There are other coffeeshops in Amsterdam open till 3AM Friday & Saturday nights.

You're right it was a place right by Tweede Kamer that had the seats outside and thank you for letting them know more about the night life as I sure don't know much in that department lol

Here nightclubs/bars usually close at 2 am so I guess I considered it a nightclub... I know De Rokerij near Singel is open until at least 3 am but it's a coffeeshop/bar :)

    Peace,
    islandgurl

Islandgurl, the coffeeshop you likely mean is Dutch Flowers. In Amsterdam, most clubs stay open to 4AM during the week and 5AM on Friday & Saturday nights.

lol We're cool, 420... I was just having fun. Life's too short to be taken too seriously and I'm a big goof, mostly. What good is life if you can't laugh hard and long at least once a day so much that it makes your cheeks hurt? :p

    Peace,

My "acronym" is LUMSH... laughing until my sides hurt!

BTW, I think we will both be in A'Dam at the end of the month, first of August. Maybe we can smoke a peace pipe together? Should I wear my Dr. Phil disguise? :sunglasse

Just realized it will be the morning of the 27th that I will actually be in the dam. Maybe we can shoot for the 27th-30th (Thurs-Sun) if one of those days works for you. :)

Oh, well... We're hitting A'Dam on the 28th, but will hit some shops, the car rental place, and then drive to Germany, not coming back to A'Dam until August 1, staying until August 12.

    Maybe next time?

Funny FBN I was just looking at that a little while ago. I read the channels forum sometimes as well, but don't really know anyone there but Dedbud whom I've communicated with before. Looks like a nice bunch in there... good to see you in here :)

    Peace,

Aw FBN <blush> only because I'm a girl and you're a straight guy lol ;)
Hope to meet you one day... maybe queensday next year. I've never been during that time, but it seems like it would be better not so crowded and congested as it is during queensday. I have to admit though, sure sounds fun to be there with a big group of stoners like me :) When will you be there next?

God Bless ya, FBN lol I'll be 42 next month so you can't be too much older than me... I just look young ;) <singing> "If you are among the very young at heart"
