I am lactose intolerant, anaemic, and staving of diabetes as best I can, although I'm pretty sure I've already lost that fight (I can't afford a doctor to find out.). I also have a stomach ulcer. The gastrointestinal fun never stops, does it? My usual diet, if left to myself, is raw veggies like carrots and celery, fresh fruit on occasion, plain bread, and whatever protein I can B.S. out of the fridge. Right now, I'm passing on loaf bread and spreading salmon and cream cheese on crackers, but I also enjoy fried catfish sans seasoning or steak tartare. I don't really have a moral reason for eating like this, I just tried it for a couple of weeks (no money, and nothing else in the fridge for a while) and found that afterwards my stomach couldn't handle processed food. A MacDonalds lunch nearly did me in that first day, though with further research I'm not surprised. I hear it can make Hyaenas sick. Now I just eat it because it tastes "clean" to me and cooked or processed foods don't. I have no moral issues with meat. Animals eat each other, and I am an animal, admittedly no better than the Hyaena . Eggs and dairy (when I can eat it) are no problem either, they don't really hurt the animals anyway. However, I am usually broke and meat is expensive. I'm also extremely curious, and as you can guess concerned for my health in the long term. My three roomies are meat-eaters, though one of them is open-minded. My stomach is a little stronger now, but not by much. Are there any vegetarians who might be able to offer suggestions as to food and nutrition? Thanks.
If you're looking for protein alternatives that don't cost a bunch and ought to sit well on your stomach I'd recommend rice & beans. They're about as cheap as you can get. Cottage cheese and yogurt were the the last dairy products to give me problems, (I've slowly become more & more lactose intolerant) so if you can stomach them they're pretty good too. And then there's tofu or soy milk. But they can be a little more pricey. Overall diet? You need ONLY 6-10 servings of grains, 5-9 servings of fruits & veggies, 6-8 servings of calcium-rich foods, and 2-3 servings of proteins per day. There are tons of places online to check serving sizes... the ones that I remember off the top of my head are: Most Lean Meats - the size of a standard deck of cards Rice - 1/3 cup Cooked Pasta - 1/2 cup Sliced Bread - 1 slice Thicker Breads (like a bagel, hamburger bun or normal size muffin) 1/2 Most Fruits - 1 cup raw fruit, or 1/2 cup 100% juice Berries - 1 1/4 cups Leafy Veggies - 2 cups Raw Veggies - 1 cup Cooked Veggies - 1/2 cup Milk - 1 cup Cheese - the size of one cheese slice or a 1" cube Hope that helps! And I hope your stomach starts feeling better! love, mom
Hi Sqirrel! I'm not meaning to be nitpicky, and I understand that you aren't really concerned with the moral issues surrounding animal consumption, but I have to just stand up for a moment for the dairy cows and battery hens you say are not harmed. They are in fact harmed in both physical and psychological ways. The reason I want to clear up the myth is because people that are interested in the welfare of animals deserve to know the truth so they can make an educated decision about their ethical choices. The meat AND dairy/egg industry are very good at keeping their abusive practices well hidden from the public. They're also very good at making people believe that their animals are happy animals with a crazy good life. Below are some links for you to check out if you'd like to learn more about the industry. You'll also be able to learn more about how to eat a healthful veg diet (if that's what you want). I hope you find something helpful to you. http://www.veganoutreach.org/index.html http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming.asp http://www.unhappycows.com/ http://www.shameway.com/eggs2.asp http://www.torturedcows.com/index.html
Spooner, that is the standard 2000 calorie per day breakdown. If you chose to sit in a chair all day or were on a strict diet, you would actually REDUCE that by as much as 1/3! Now "super-athletes" do need as much as 1/3 more... so if you're blessed with a body that can keep up a very active lifestyle, then no of course that is nothing like what you would need to consume. love, mom
ah. i work in the bush for 12 hours a day. for breakfast i had two eggos, cereal, an orange, two glasses of milk, a bagel, and a cup of coffee. lunch consisted of three pastrami sandwhiches, a gatorade, an orange, and a butterscotch pudding. for dinner i'm splitting a sixteen inch pizza and a case of beer with my roommate. if i eat less tahn this while working, i start dropping pounds. i'll probably have a second dinner before i go to bed. maybe make pasta.
I hear that man! I reckon I must eat 3-4000 calories a day. I've never counted tho. Granted, its all vegan calories and I run and cycle a lot each day. Anyways I'm off to fry tofu.
