Haven't seen any posts in here about it. From what I gather most people don't particularly care for this city. So, positives / negatives from those who have been there or know more about it.
it's alright - quite a pretty city in fact, if a little spread out (you really need a car to get around, unlike other cities). It's aucklanders that are the problem - many of them are arrogant, yupie types who think they are the shit and are very very pro capitalism. And they voted one of the world's biggest nongs, John Banks as their mayor - unforgivable.
Ugh screw Auckland, I think its ugly, the people are wankers and its expensive. Lets change the subject to Wellington, so much PRETTIER and the people are AWESOME. I never realised it but my fav thing about Wellington has become riding on the bus every morning and seeing the sun shining on the harbour. BEAUTIFULL.
Glorya, you are so cute. I miss that about wellington... I miss catching buses. Can't do that here. They tend to blow up sometimes. Auckland does have pros and cons. However as a native wellingtonian, the cons definitely outweigh the pros. Like, Auckland is great cos its got everything you could possibly need or want in it. The problem is that when you've got one thing you want, anything else you could possibly want is at least an hour away on totally congested highways because the city was never supposed to be that big. also, they elected john banks who's a total moron. And only like 40% of people living in Auckland voted. he shouldn't be mayor. arsehole. Also, AUckland has a huge rich/poor gap. North Shore is fucking rich (lots of rich south african immigrants) and then there's south auckland which (apart from Porirua) is one of the worst gang and drug areas in teh country. So yeah... 'm not really a fan of auckland. -Tamsyn
Sometimes, when I sit at home in the Coromandel over my Summer break, and it's a clear, fine day, I can see the lights on the sky tower. That is about as close as you ever wanna be to Auckland. Actually, I stayed with some mates on K road last hols, and it seems an okay place.
hahahaha K road, now that WOULD a good time for a guy I can imagine. I went up to Auckland in Janurary this year while I was still with Glen. It was crazy, I couldnt remember ANYTHING of it from when I had been a child, it was all so different. I really don't like Auckland at all,we went out to one semi-cool club though, I can't remember what it was called, however.
doug! you dirty little boy. Such filth will NOT be tolerated, thank you very much. And anyway, I find that it's always more fun to bite a jafa.....
LOL. you soooooo WILL tollerate it. i know you love it....... hey sophie are you a jafa or have decended from a jafa in any way? if not, you can always pretend to be one just for one night . Doug
no I proud to say I have no jafa heritage. it's all pretty much wellington and ireland. hah!. and I don't know if ANYTHING would be enough to persuade me to become even a temporary jafa.....LOL. which reminds me - why is Wellington so windy? beacuse auckland sucks/ because auckland blows. ahahahahahahahaha. not funny.
well living in whangas going to auck tend to be a big woop-di-do (even tho it's only 2 hrs away) and it can be pretty fun, you just gotta know where to go too expensive to live their though ( 4 me anyway) which is kinda sad coz i always figured id go to uni there, but thats the way it goes but the best stuff bout auck is the multiculturalness....and my falafel man
May I offer an opinion from someone that actually KNOWS because theyre from there?? Or will no one listen to me anyway because Im so up myself. North Shore too I might add. Peace. If you're interested, yep everyone hates people from the North Shore here, and everyone in the country hates Aucklanders, so I guess that makes me one of the most hated people in New Zealand. How about that. Theres a good range of restaurants and that here, so theres lots of competition therefore you can get a lot of stuff cheap. The ethnic makeup of the city is really fucked, a lot of Maori and Polynesians live in South Auckland, whereas its true a lot of South African and Europeans like myself live on the North Side. The associated income brackets referred to before are also relatively accurate unfortunately. Were probably the most Americanised city of New Zealand-dont have to go far for McDonalds-but you do have to go far for scenery, at least far from the central business district. There are some nice places around the outsides and if you look carefuly theres a few in the inner city but it is essentially metropolitan. However I must object to being called a stuck up wanker. It depends where you go and who you talk to. And Im sure theres at least one of those in every town. I worked for a month packing boxes on a night shift to pay for this computer, which I bought from a reposession clearance store in Otahuhu. I also have a student loan to pay for my studies. I cant afford much labelled clothes-I wear whats comfortable and warm, as it gets damn cold on Queen Street in the winter. So forget the stereotypes-a lot of us are 'normal' people too. Hope that helps
out of curiosity....what makes a city americanized? how many mcdonalds a city has? Hehe if so, most of europe is pretty damn americanized.
americanised? I would assume that means stuff like international labels and chains - eg Maccas, starbucks etc - as well as the general attitude to things - large chains rather then stand-alone small businesses. that sort of thing. And my best friend is from the North Shore. She's a south african girl with a trust fund. she's totally stereotypical. And as she says, "A Shore Girl is a Sure Thing."
perhaps just a more american way of viewing the world than the rest of NZ - a little more conservative perhaps, more focused on business and money and such - its a massive generalisation, of course, but also kinda true.
