worst part of my job

having to tell kids that they can't come back to camp anymore, that they're kicked out. no matter how bad they act up, its always hard to do or recommend that action.

today, we kicked out 3 kids for the summer. 3 kids on the 2nd day of camp. i had said i wanted a kid to get a week suspension, because he wouldn't listen to me. it was raining out and the rest of the kids were inside waiting to get picked up. he was outside of the stadium waiting. so i told him that he had to go inside, and he talked back. so i told him he wasn't going to come back for a week and that i'd talk to his father. well, i got a person higher ranking than me, and he tried talking to the kid and wouldn't listen. then we got our boss to talk to him, and he wouldn't listen. then he talked back to my boss' boss. and she just said he wasn't coming back this summer...

 

If kids though get too far out of line they need to be kicked out though, no matter how hard it is.

 

yea, show the little bastards how it goes.

i just dont' understand why these kids act up so much, even when given multiple chances.

one of the other kids i gave so many chances to clean up his act before i brought him over to the tent for being bad. then once there, he stilll acted up, even with my boss...

 

It's amazing how some kids are. I mean, to be that blatantly defiant over something so simple? Sounds like there's deeper issues somewhere. And that's what's sad really. That kid ruined his chances of perhaps a good, positive experience for himself.

Sorry you had to deal with that today fitzy, but like the others in here have said, well, not in the same words, but when you act up like that, there needs to be consequences unfortunately.

 

thats exactly why its sad. those kids just ruined a chance to have a fun summer. because now its going to be extremely hard to get them into something to do...

i don't have a problem doing it...its just sad that i had to do it on the 2nd day of camp

 

I know, I'd have a really difficult time doing that too. Hopefully you won't have to do much more, if any, of it the rest of the summer.

 

i'm sure i will be. with the large increase in kids, the higher the probability of more troubled kids is.

wish the city would actually fund iniatives to help or fund staff that are trained to deal with problematic kids...but hey, they rather slash funding for programs like us....

That's really sad. I mean, those kids could really benefit from having such an experience at the camp, being around positive influences, people who actually care about them. I mean you never know, it can have a major impact on them in a really good way, could plant a seed of hope within, make them want to change things in their lives.

 

thats why i do this job. if i can help only 1 kid, thats it, 1 kid...i'll have done a great job. i hope to help more in some fashion...maybe its only getting them to realize that they should exercise regularly or eat healthier or to not make fun of others because they're different.

 

You're a good person fitzy. I think with your attitude, you are going to definitely help many of those kids.

 

i hope so. too much violence going on in boston this summer. they certainly need some people to look up to

 

You really do good work. It's inspiring to watch someone work so hard to better a life or two-especially children. It's probably the most rewarding line of work a person can have.
