Ive been thinking about dreads for a while now but I really have no clue on how to start. Ive read through a dozen or so threads and really haven't found what I needed. Ive grown my hair out (only about 5 inches or so) and my hair is really thick so it just kinda frizzes out. If I was to stop conditioning and only use natural shampoo or soap that's talked about in other posts, will my hair start to dread??? And what is backcombing? I'm sorry if this has been covered I just couldn't find it........ *peaceLOVErespect*
your hair will eventually dread. it will just take a long long timee to start seeing the results. backcombing is just taking hair and u know when u brush ur hair... well do it the opposite way. basically its in the name u back comb ur hair haha. i cant think of a better way to explain it. go to knottyboy.com and they have instructions on how to dread ur hair. you should def. check it out. peace~
if you want uniformed, instant dreads, backcomb (and look up the instructions like forest420 said). if you want interesting dreads, just dont brush or use conditioner. ... but it takes a long time. and is the more spiritual way of doing it.
I recommend backcombing and is your hair straight and ultra fine like a asian or cauccasians hair? Cause if it is I reccommend getting your hair permed (tight curls) then braiding (cornrows) your hair and wet the rows in a pool or so everyday and when you take em out ur hair will be very textured the backcomb. Backcombing: Take a section of hair and take a metal strong comb and run your hair down towards your scalp. inch by inch from root to tip of your hair it'll knot up. RECOMMENED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fOR STRAIGHT HAIR THAT GREESES QUICK MAKE THINNER DREADS THEY DRY QUICKER THEN FAT ONES Fat dreads: tighten quicker but dry slower Thin: Dry quicker, tighten slower
'preciate the help....and my hair is really thick and coarse, almost curly but not quite (if that makes sense). And can i use any shampoo and just not conditioner?
Ok I just read the instructions on that link, and not only to they encourage using the wax, they said that it conditions your hair and makes them stronger and healthier. This seems to be the opposite from what I've seen on this site. Would it hurt to use small doses of the wax to get the dreds started, and stop completely after a couple weeks?
everyone has a different opinion on it. i can tell you i only used wax a few times and very sparingly (and NEVER beeswax) and yet when i took my dreads out i found a few small chunks.. which you shouldn't have chuncks of anything in there. i would like to point out that knottyboy and some other dread websites are trying to get you to buy their wax.. so keep that in mind.
umm no they don't.. they do? I can hardly imagine.. damn I gave you that link cause I thought it would tell you otherwise.. anyway wax is bad
even if ur hair is straight and thin u dont need a perm. i had straight thick hair and it dreaded fine. perms are just a waste of money i think because no matter what after a while ur hair will dread. if u want fatter dreads then yea u take more hair. and not all ur dreads have to be the same size either, it adds character when they are like that haha. peace~
I totally disagree with Scorpius, based solely on my experience dreading my daughter's very fine, very straight, red hair. backcombing actually prevented dreads from forming in her hair, it all had to fall out first before her hair started knotting up. Backcombed hair might look like dreads, but it isn't. We did not resort to damaging the hair with harsh chemicals, either. That's not necessary. Doesn't matter how fat or thin you make your dreads, do what you want, it's your hair!
Yeah backcombing may have some falle apart but if you see some lose let em go put a bead on em no rubberbands.... After I backcomb mine I go natural! Thats been the plan
