Sorry, but creationism is absolutely proven to be utter and complete bullshit, as any science student older than ten can directly demonstrate to you. Evolution is as proven and documented as anything can be, and its predictions continue to be confirmed with new discoveries MANY TIMES EVERY SINGLE DAY WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

Example of this guy's "work" (it gets quite stupid on the very first page):

"What about the people you see walking along the street? Or the trees you pass by, the dog that runs out in front of you, the pigeons that build their nests in the eaves of your house, the flowers on your table, the sky above you? Could their existence be by chance, do you think?"

What an asshole. Chance? WTF? Anyone who has done even the most brief reading of material about evolution knows that there are very specific proven mechanisms that make it happen, not "chance." NO ONE SUGGESTS THAT IT ALL JUST HAPPENED BY ACCIDENT!

I feel a little bit bad that my reaction was so harsh, and indirectly aimed towards someone who seems (based on posts on other matters) to have a very good heart and mind. But here in the USA, there's a strain of Christian fundamentalism, best typified by Bush-supporters, whose anti-science attitutes are actually a serious threat to our national well-being.

Mankind's only hope for long-term survival is to toss out these silly notions of "gods" and deal with our problems with our minds and our hands and feet and with the tools we create. As someone recently put it,

"Gods don't kill people. People with gods kill people."

I wasn't really opinionated on the matter until I took up invertebrate paleontology as a hobby. The amount of research that's been done is collossal, and I'm not exaggerating at all when I insist that the matter is absolutely settled and proven beyond the foggiest doubt. If evolution wasn't a fact, the evidence of it would be measured in hundreds of millions of tons of fossils which would, if it weren't a fact, refute it clearly, rather than substatiate it.

Don't take my word for it. Familiarize yourself with basic concepts of sedimentary geology, taphonomy, and so on, and go out and look with your own eyes. Why read some printed book about creation, when you can read creation directly from the source?

Okay, I've ranted long enough

But in a last word, I'll admit that I once believed there were holes in the theory, but since then I've learned just how colorable those ideas really are.

I think its incredable that all 15 of those books are free, how can people write books and not get paid for them? Must be christianitys deep pockets from not allowing priests to marry, so conviently when people die and leave land to the priest and the priest dies (with no heirs as they cant marry and have kids) the roman catholic church gets the land. Alright, first off, evolution refers to two distinct thing.

The first one, which is irrefutable, is that organisms change over time. We can see this happening in labs to bacteria. That's true, it happens, it doesn't matter what anyone ways, living creatures do change to meet changing conditions. That's evolution, and it happens.

The second meaning, is that these changes happened from common ancestory, which is very well documented, we can see species which are links between fish and amphibians, and amphibians. Anyone whos religion blindsides them to the degree where they can't keep their religion and alook at the facts of how life changed, means their faith isn't very strong. Consequently, they have to try and disprove facts.

It helps if they come up with ridiculous proposals such as evolution is linked to paganism.

It is nice to see you continue to spam this forum with your propoganda - I know a lot of "progressive thinkers" and leftists seem to be Islamic symathizers, as if Islam is somehow more acceptable than Christianity - I'm not one of them. I think all of the Abrahamic religions are obsolete and damaging to society and modern reason.

In reponse to your post, just one question - how did Noah wrangle up the T-Rex to get it on the Ark?

I had a physics teacher in highschool that believed in creationism - althought he admited he had no scientific or rational reason for it - it was purely emotional, and he didn't attempt to explain to us the mythology of the Bible in terms of physics. Those Christians (or in this case Muslims) that go out of there way to scientifically explain every absurdity of the Bible somehow cheapen it in the process. If god is all powerful why must you create half assed pseudoscientific theories to justify your faith? Seems like an act of desperation by a world view that hinges on ignorance.

You are, of course, allowed to believe whatever you want - some people still believe the earth is flat and such (and they have scientific "facts" to back it up) I do have a problem when superstition is forced on people. You are free to believe that Allah or Jesus or Yahweh created existance or that a giant cows salt lick is the origin of mankind (Norse creation myth) but please keep your "scientific facts" out of public schools unless they are being taught as what they really are: mythology and philosophy.

BTW I love your note that you will feel free to ignore anyone you don't agree with. I would expect nothing less from a true believer.

 

Personally, I have no problem with Islam or Christianity or any other religion as long as the "faithful" are aware that those "truths" are only truths in a world that is not actually physically real.

The "magic" of Abbey Road or other great music is far more than the sum of its musical and lyrical pieces. But I would never try to argue that the visualizations such music provides me becomes "real" in the physical sense. To suggest such a thing is ridiculous. Yet we "feel it" all the same. And we enjoy the illusion. Why can't religious people tell their tales, and let people enjoy it as beautiful on its own ground? Some Pagans do (though most I've met fall into the same idiotic trap as the others). Enjoy the illusion just like you enjoy a rainbow, that's my view.

But most religious people try to claim that their fantasies are physically real, and that's why I find religions like Christianity and Islam to be a serious danger to mankind. The very act of "faith" is a crime against humanity no matter what the religion of the one committing it, in my opinion.

Anyone who disagrees with evolution needs to believe that the obvious similarities between house cats and lions, and between humans and chimpanzees are coincidental.

When Darwin published The Origin of Species and The Descent of Man many more people were familiar with agriculture than today. They knew that a wise farmer did not butcher his most succulent pigs. He saved them to be parents of future generations of pigs. They knew that farmers did the same with other farm animals and crops, and that horse breeders and dog breeders did so too.

It was easy for them to understand that in the wild predators that were stronger and faster caught more prey animals, and that prey animals who were stronger and faster were better able to out fight and out run predators.
