why do people buy ramen instead of just buying pasta and adding spices that don't include chicken fat and more salt than an ocean? why do people buy rice a roni instead of just buying rice? why do we pay so much extra for boxes and plastic bags and little packets of seasonings we already own?
ummm try living on your own. then you'll understand why you buy the food thats less than a dollar. and when you're poor, you dont typically have a spice rack
Because we're very lazy! Lazy and well trained as a society to value colourful pre-packaged boxes over boring food at home without logos on the pack. Also, cooking at home requires a little imagination, a little effort and might even *gasp* put you in the situation of not being distracted by everything else so much that you might have to have a meaningful conversation with whoever you live with, or else actually be confronted with your own mind staring back at you! haha.. *highly uncomfortable for many* Oh, and western society values the "time = money" mentality so much that choosing something that is slow to prepare and cook, is almost subconsciously shameful to us perhaps. We're supposed to be rushing around all the time striving, jumping through hoops, networking, studying, achieving, and most of all, making money. There's no time to cook at home when you have to be out there doing all of that! Contemplation and graceful repose are out of fashion.
for a dollar, you can live off ramen for a day or two. maybe a few days, if it's off-brand. if you buy bulk pasta/rice and spices, which all together probably won't be more than $10, you'll be set for about a month, and then you'll still have the spices. and the people i'm talking about are not poor. if you're poor you think about the value of things, instead of buying whatever is the prettiest and fastest to make. if you're poor, hopefully, you learn about investing into things to save money over time.

i didnt buy it cause it was pretty. i bought it cause i only had a buck for groceries. I've never thought ramen was pretty.
you're not who i'm talking about though. if you only have a dollar to spend on food, yeah, ramen is awesome. but if you're a middle-to-upper-class person, have a job and drive a car and buy groceries normal american type, and you buy cases of ramen and boxes of rice a roni and easy mac, THAT is what i don't understand. or if you're going camping, and you buy a box of individual packets of ramen instead of just buying a bag of noodles. if you buy just one or two, just to have something to eat, that's cool and i understand. i just don't get why it's a thing people have a lot of in their house.
We are cheap bastards, we want all the money we can get. Pure and simple. But I don't know about this, because Whitney Houston says she makes too much money to buy crack. If crack is anything like Ramen noodles, well you see what I'm getting at..
This idea of spices etc.. made me think that if anything, it's more important to have a set of basic spices around when you are low on money. If you value having nice tasting food that is... I know it's not always possible if very poor, but if you buy bulk spices as Prismatism said, then many simple foods are able to be turned into much nicer meals. I've done this before myself with simple rices or pasta type foods. With that extra touch of 'love', you don't feel like you're just eating junk. Oh and I just remembered, MSG in instant foods is probably a big factor in people choosing it over more normal food. Addictive!
I wasn't saying you were talking about me (though I'm no longer in that situation). I was just saying poor people dont buy "pretty" food. Why do people pay a ton of money to have "gourmet" food thats not going to fill you up, when you could eat at a buffet? Why do people pay a ton of money on CDs, when you can get music off the internet? Why do people pay a ton of money to have fancy rims on their car, when they could save up and buy a hybrid? People spend money on whatever they want. Theres more often than not, no logic behind desire.
Okay, Katie, this is what I recommend. You're 16... I recommend that you just stop caring. Who cares what people buy to eat? If you want to buy big bags of noodles and spices, go ahead. If someone else doesn't, does it matter? This is far too petty to worry your little head over. Go smash some mailboxes or something, or whatever it is teenagers do. Go try to synch up The Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon, I don't know. Just relax...
It's ramen. You can't touch ramen. Nothing will ever compare to ramen. I gave up eating it because it's so fattening, but I'd kill for a bowl right now/any day. I've pretty much lived on it before out of necessity. It has thousands of uses. It works.
lol ... that hurts me, cuz Katie's prolly the most relaxed and laidback chick ive ever seen in my whole life im ready to bet my ass off she was high but i do agree this question has too many if's and why's.. we could as well go into why people buy houses with so much room for just a few, why there's so many lights in a room with already high luminosity, why we use so much water for baking and cleaning.. etc etc
lol i just dont like it when people understimate people and use their personalities such as their age or anything to get a message through. i know it might be just silly talk . but still, it lacks of consistance. Also Katie's intelligence is not something to mess with it was pretty arrogant of lucifer sam's to say something like that (youre still cool though )
