So today I found out my mentally retarded and schitsofrenic aunt has been put on a new line of medication from her new doctor. Now I don't know exactly what it is, but I feel they've killed her.

She used to be social, and talk normal. She used to want to go out and dance, she used to love taking walks, going to family gathering etc. She was more social than all of us combined. On the downside, she would flip out occasionally, but nothing too bad.

Now, she's a zombie. She actually refused to go to our 4th of July party, she refused to see the fireworks tonight. Two of her most favorite things. She talks lazily now, and it's almost as if she's not all there. I'm really concerned, apparently she won't do anything with my grandma.

Now what's my protest exactly? I think there are many doctors presribing these drugs to glaze over the problem, not to fix it. In the old days they'd just take a chunk of a mentally retarded brain so they'd be a vegetable, something no one would have to worry about. And I feel like they're still doing it today, only in the form of drugs.

Another example are all these damn teenagers with ADHD. I think atleast 1/3 of my friends have been diagnosed with ADHD. Most of them don't bother taking the medicine, and they seem normal as always. Sure they like to have fun, go out, but it seems parents are taking what is good clean teenager like behaviour, and saying it's ADHD so they can control their kids more easily.

One friend of mine, we'll call him T, is also durastically changed. He takes more than ADHD medicine now, but he seems so... Zombie like now. I'm not sure what drugs he's been taking, but... He just doesen't seem like himself anymore...

To sum up my point, I don't think it's entirely the doctor's fault, but rather the parents. My grandma is pushing 70 and it's becoming difficult to handle my aunt, so they turned her into a zombie. (My grandma is not a bad person, just not from this country and didn't know)

My friends like to party, and have fun. You know, the peak of our lives, and parents are so quick to turn to drugs to take care of their parenting problems.

I'm not saying all presribed drugs are bad, just that parents should fulfill their roles a little bit better before they rely on drugs entirely.

I'm protesting parents who feed their kids "medicine" and doctors who are quick to prescribe them.

as someone who Overdosed on Ritalin tablets (the "medicine" for those with ADHD) i can see WHY this medicine turns people into zombies. I don't have ADHD so instead of quieting me down - it gave me hyperactivity and felt like i'd done the biggest pile of speed ever. before the OD i took it a few times recreationally mixed with weed to experiment - 5 weeks on the trot. then I took 56 in one day max is 8 a day for someone who needs it.

You can only imagine how my body was working. I lost 5 days sleep, I was "up" for a week and the comedown off it lasted about 2 months. I seriously thought I was going to die.

the psychoactive ingredient in Ritalin is Methylphenidate which is also a compound in Speed. It wasn't until after I'd took them that i researched and found this out. After realising I could of died and reading about how recreational ritalin use can cause seizures and compressed air bubbles within the brain, I began getting pure on edge and it took me almost a whole year to "get back to feeling normal again".

Ritalin is scum of the earth substance number one (seeing as it's so easy to get hold of, has hugely noticable effects and given to kids). No-one deserves to go through the after-effects of Ritalin - serious psychotic episodes upon withdrawal.

is not ADD it is very much a medical condition and can really mess up your life. Medication has proven to help although there is no cure. Likely thru tests her condition was declining as it usally will over the years and they felt the need to change her medications. The new medications she is taking will at first likely have that affect on her sadly but in a set amount of time that a doctor should have told a family member should clear up and have her back to her normal self. If it does not clear up then the dose is wrong or the medication is wrong for her.

Also it is a family condition that can be passed along and in most cases does not show up untill the symptoms show up, it is a disorder that actually can be tested for.

Again though you are right about alot of people would rather medicate problems than try to work with people, look at nursing homes, most keep them in a drugged up state to avoid actually having to deal with them.
