hello all. i have never been too keen on cars before, always preferring to pretend them unnecessary. but alas, i am 22 now and i think its time to actually buy one. i know - nothing - about cars. i want something cheap and used, maybe 5 grand? and good gas mileage too. what brands do you recommend? should i go to used car lots, or buy online (if so, what site?). i'd like to read up for awhile too. basically, i have no idea how to go about this, so any advice would be cool, and i live in the US.

oh, and i have been reading up on biodiesel and it seems pretty neat. i like the diesel VW golfs. what other diesel cars should i check out? or is buying diesel a bad idea?

    cheers

    I've always liked diesel vehicles.
Don't know much of the new VW's.

DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE HITTING THE CAR LOTS!!!

Try this site - not sure what's available for non-members.

if it has been cared for a VW is a great car, the turbo diesel will provide great fuel economy too like well into the 45+ and they dont look too bad either.

Volvo is another good car, but VW would be my choice for a first car, thye last, parts are easy to find and again they are not ugly.

my mom has a vw diesel golf converted to biodiesel and she like it a lot. I'm not a fan of it because I find vw's kinda uncomftrable to drive because of the way the seats are but I must admit her diesel engine is almost as powerful as my suped up v6

I love volvos. They don't make diesels but the new s40's are so cute. I am awaiting the one i want to come in stock and still deciding whether I want to lease or own it because their lease programs are really reasonable. They are practically sold out here.
