The joys of having escaped mental patients be incharge of your job. So I am only allowed by federal law to drive 11 hours and company policy only allows me to log 67MPH. That is total of 737 miles a day. It is a 1078 miles from Springfield MO to Amarillo TX and back again to Springfield leaving a need to come up with 341 miles and roughly 5 hours. Now it would be simple to say drive out from Springfield to Amarillo then say make it to OK City for your required 10 hr break then finish the run up but they need that produce ASAP so you drive the fill 1078 straight. When you get bac you would think they would want you to take your 10 hr break in peace and then you would be ready to do it again. OH HELL NO, they decide its a good idea to while your sleeping to re-assign your truck to somebody else so you have no place to sleep for your break. I have surmmized you are not allowed to stop to take your federal mandated break on the road and when you get back you cant take your past due break there unless you want to (for me drive 2.5hrs home and thats not counting the time to take my stuff off the truck) sleep and be back rdy to go all in 10 hrs, or pay for a hotel room or sleep out under the stars on the concrete, lol. I left there today and shall not return untill after some serious issues get resolved to my satisfaction Monday and even then still not sure. One thing nice about driving, I made enough in 2.5 weeks to survive roughly 2 months.
:sunglasse Let me know when you got a high dollar load on and you wont have to work for a couple years.
Trust me I do make it, the problem is with them wanting to take your truck away after you make the flip leaving you bedless, thats the problem unless you want to get a hotel or in my case drive back home. The hired us for a 4 flip run then home, not make a what ever trip then pull you out in the middle of your sleep time after you just did a 17 hrs day, 4 hr break, 19 hr day and then pull your bed out from ya but expect you to be awake to still run. Trust me I have done many a 36+ hr runs with no sleep.
That's some fucked up shit.... seriously... I wouldn't take that. (note- I know you like what you do but if they don't straighten up, maybe you can find a more reasonable company)
Most management refuses to regard those in their employ as actual people- instead, workers are treated more like pieces of machinery. To your boss, you're little more than a device that conveys the truck from point A to point B. My guess is that one company isn't going to be any better than the next. When the object of the game is to make as much money as humanly possible there's no room for such considerations as federally mandated rest periods, sleep, arranging driver switches where one driver can get rest, etc. The only time these are important is when they get caught.
Oh there are indeed but they are few and far between. The best thing for most people is to get as much as they can from what the corporation alleges to offer and maintain their sanity. Gone is the day when employers are loyal to their employees. Oh they DO demand loyalty from those who work but there is no reciprocity; most folks go through the motions of pretend fidelity while constantly on covert lookout for a better deal because they KNOW that they will be dumped in a heartbeat as soon as their position becomes expendable or someone cheaper comes by who can do their job. No longer do corporations feel any responsibility for the well being of those who are long-term. It's all about the bottom line and you HAVE to show your profitability to justify your presence or you're on the outside looking in. Following federal (including OSHA) safety mandates is a matter of reacting to a threatened audit/inspection and almost NEVER company policy as such behavior is quite unprofitable. Instead, employees are expected to doctor records and otherwise required to make it LOOK like the company has been doing things nice. Calling state and federal agencies to bring a corporation in line is difficult because actually enforcing the law is expensive. There needs to be hard proof of big fineworthy violations to move the big beast of government into action as they care even less about individual well-being- it's all about THEIR bottom line too!
The fucked up part is that if you do what the company wants and DOT happens to get a whiff of it, the company denies knowledge and you get blamed cause "its your log book"
Can you get you own rig, & become independent? I don't know much on the topic..How feasible is that? Being your own boss...I keep brainstorming a way to that. I may get there someday.
...Just got a mini education on the topic...nvrmd Guess owning your own truck would buy you some freedom, at a hefty price.
I guess I was just bitching, I mean its the industry, all the real good jobs out there only free up when a person dies. Why should I have expected this company to act any different than any other. I mean there is reasons I guess why others dont bother to do a good job anymore and I guess I just need to beat it out of my head to just do for myself and not work hard for my employer.
That's how I felt at my last job. The harder I worked the more I simply got fucked over, denied, or ignored. So, I started to do about the same amount of work as everyone else towards the end there.
One more brilliant contribution to the decline in this world. They instead of letting people work hard for them and being happy, instead they mess with ya, lol. Pure logic I guess.
Very symptomatic of the workplace in general. Good workers don't get raises because upper management is already getting the job done at a lower price. Productive workers get extra responsibilitie sloughed off by lazier co-workers because it's just easier for middle-management to pile it up on someone who will do the work then fight with someone who won't. Most people will do just enough to "get by"- the productive few get fucked over by the floor boss by getting more shit to do and screwed over by the big boss who doesn't care as long as the work gets done. Asking for a raise is more likely to get one fired than non-productivity. Wanting more money is a signal to payroll that you're getting too expensive. It doesn't matter in the least to the big boss that a new worker is not going to as much or as good work. It's the middle manager's job to bridge any such gaps and the big boss's job is getting done cheaper. His bottom line fattens- he couldn't be happier. The American workplace is trending more and more toward slave labor. The cost of living is rising far faster than middle-income wages as it is increasingly the rich that are deciding market forces. The government can't do much about it if they weanted to (they don't) because corporations can just move operations across the border where labor is cheap.
I did not want a raise just knowledge that after doing my job I have a safe place to shut down at without being ripped from sleep and having no place to go and then be told to drive 80,000 pounds of machine while sleepy.
