hey i started my dreads with backcombing and wax about 6 months ago ( i know alot of you dudes/dudettes are anti wax but help me anyways!)

i seem to have some mold buildup in afew of my dreads, i guess early on i wasnt dying them well enough or perhaps using too much wax, either way i want to know if there is anyway to remove the mold from my dreads

i heard about diping them in vinegar or something? will that make the actuall mold go away?

also i was thinking of trying to cut some of the mold out very carefully as a last resort

so plz! if you have any suggestions that may help make me become MOLD free please heeeelp me!!!!!

also this forum has inspired me to go wax free for a while :)

what does the mold look like? are you sure its really mold?
I used to have some stuff in my hair that I thought was mold maybe...but turned out it was just a combination of dead skin, lint, and dust. does your hair smell funny?

actually i dont think it is mold anymore i think its just a few places where the dread wax has built up

so now, does anyone know how to get the buildup of wax out?

boiling water alone won't get the wax out, it will just melt it in deeper. You gotta use some sort of soap or shampoo. And you gotta really scrub. We only used the tiniest bit of wax in my daughter's hair, and it took a good bit of scrubbing to get it all washed out.

no...i can understan for using wax...a good way to get rid of mold in your dreads is to scrub them very well and blow dry them after you do..and after EVERY time u wash....airdried dreads get the worst mold, and mostly because the water cannot dry out thouroughly and it creates a buildup of nastiness.

I'm sure everyone's hair is different, but I will share my experience with my daughter's dreads. We started with backcombing and used just the tiniest bit of wax, like in the palm of my hands so that palmrolling would work better. It did make the backcombed "locks" look neater. BUT.... it also prevented the backcombing from coming undone. Her hair did not start to really dread up until after the backcombing fell out. I believe the whole backcombing and wax thing really slowed down the dreading process. I'd honestly suggest you forget it, let your hair do what it wants because backcombed hair might look kinda like dreadlocks, but it isn't. Get all the gunk washed out really well (and yes, this will mean you have more loose hairs and it won't look so neat anymore), and just leave it alone for a couple months. Just wash your hair regularly enough to keep it clean. I do think blowdrying is a very good idea.

let me stand corrected which i havent said b4 in other posts ive made on wax...my dreads are only 3 inches long...in my case i only use a small(i mean small) amount of wax to keep together as they grow..when they hit about 6 inches long i quite using wax altogether and let it go on its own...ive always had nothing but good luck doing this....but if your hair is longer than 3 to 4 inches i would not suggest using wax as you will NEVER get it out.
