There was a column in the L.A. Times last week that suggested Ann Coulter is really a satirist who is, sadly, unaware that her "social commentary" is really a distorted kind of dysfunctional comedy that is best understood in the same vein as Andrew Dice Clay or Beavis and Butthead. In that light, the only significant difference between her work and that of Steven Colbert is that Colbert and his audience are smart enough to recognize his act is a pitch-perfect caricature of of the neo-conservative mindset. I don't know if this idea is entirely true, but it helps to know that you could just laugh at the absurdity of her ideas. Peace and Love
The people who react so strongly against her are either joking (you know, like an anti-Colbert pretending to be a liberal elitist fool) or they actually don't get it...
Well,if she's a satirist, she is certainly unaware of it.She is fun to listen to tho--and thought provoking---I get a great deal of amusement about the thought of my hands around that pencil neck of hers!
She's no satirist. Her entire volume of books, soundbites, etc. are not comedic. They are hate-filled tirades. Satirist?? Ha ha...yeah. If so, she needs to find another job because she SUCKS at it. Maybe she could take lessons from Colbert.
I think Ann Coulter's understanding of reality is clouded by her prejudice and hatred of a political configuration that she erroneously names "liberal" (which rarely exists outside of her imagination) and the fact that her ill-conceived spew provides her with an income and some measure of fame. Ultimately, her "work" will prove to be irrelevant and long overdue for its well-deserved and inevitable obscurity. If she is remembered at all, it will be as a negative example (like McCarthyism or Apartheid or Fascism) of the depths of mean-spirited stupidity that difficult times can foster in those who have no love for wisdom. Ann Coulter's work is to political philosophy what Wrestlemania is to the Olympic Games, or what hog-calling is to Opera. I find it difficult to believe that anyone takes her seriously.
