I have a lot of trouble sleeping. There are days where I can't fall asleep until after 6:00 in the morning, and wake up as late as 4:30 in the afternoon. Then my sleep schedule gets all screwed up. So then I take Tylenol PM around midnight to get back on a decent sleeping sleep schedule. It's supposed to make you sleep for 9 hours, but I only sleep for about 5 hours on it, then I'm wide awake. By 5:00 in the afternoon, I’m so exhausted I’m barely functional. It's really bad, because I start work soon. Because I know someone's going to ask: I do drink caffeine, but not a lot and not before bed. I don’t stay out late or anything like that.
I drink diet soda, mostly, and caff, decaff, doesn't really make a difference to me. I'm not really a pot person. My parents grant me a lot of freedom as long as they know that I'm not breaking the law. That's the oldest excuse in the book, I know, but I like being able to do pretty much whatever I want without having to move out or pay rent. I appreciate the advice, though.
Try going to a local health food store. They might have this powdered mix that you stir in hot water you can drink. It's called "Natural Calm" or something like that (sorry 'bout the quotations), it's a product with Magnesium, which has calming properties. It's natural so it shouldn't be addictive, or have any side effects. Also try Homeopathic Calm Drops, they are like cough drops so you suck on them. I gave some to a friend of mine who was hyper, she calmed down enough that she was able to fall asleep. Even try some yoga or some other form of exercise before you go to bed. It might help wear you out, or meditate. That could relax you. I find that when I can't sleep, if I stay as still as I can for twenty minutes, if anything I might doze. Dozing is better than nothing. Hope that helps!
i wouldn't normally suggest sleeping pills but i know they helped me you just need to get your sleeping schedule re-arranged go to sleep at the same hour and wake up at the same hour and when you feel you can't sleep at your sleeping hour, take the pill(ambien works best, it doesn't cause addiction and it doesn't mix up any sleeping phases, there are some strange side effects but some people don't feel them) you just need your cicardian rythm fixed you can also try melatonin supplements...
try drinking some tea called "sleepytime" by celestial seasonings. its an american product. don't bother taking any form of caffeine it will only make things worse. any amount will play havoc. like most things theres usually some unspoken underlying problem causing all of this.
Search the Web about insomnia. There are some ways to trick your body, like making sure your room is dark, not staying in bed if you can't sleep (you should get up and do something so you don't associate bed with sleeplessness), eating a high carbohydrate dinner to promote sleepiness, taking tryptophan (available in health food stores). Unfortunately, some people's biorhythms are less perfect than others. Most people's are about 25 hours, so periodically everybody gets out of sync. Yours is more out of sync. Maybe you'd be happier taking 2 long naps a day instead of one long sleep. You can always go the sleeping pill route, but the good ones are expensive and they are all addicting, eventually. Occasional use is pretty safe if you aren't pregnant (check with OB first).
find out what is causing the insomnia in the first place. Once you know the cause, you can find a cure. I get it when I'm stressed out or depressed, and also when I'm pregnant. Taking sleeping pills, even melatonin, is addictive and not real good for your body long-term, but might help some if used sparingly. Magnesium supplements also help improve sleep quality, but won't do diddly about for-real insomnia issues.
I work shift work and one thing thats helped is those masks you put over your eyes, like on the airplane, the trick about everything being completly dark is true you wake up less often and have a more restfull sleep. I too take sleeping pills when I cant get to bed, theyre terrible I find they just shut my body down and I wake up kind of dazed in the morning, that is if I choose to get up, I find they lure me to stay in bed. I have yet to research better methods than sleeping pills. For now they work but I need to find an alternative. Good luck in your quest! -AU
I have a problem with my sleep. I refused to use normal sleeping tablets so I used herbal sleeping tablets in which had the same affect as what Trip Seeker said which was it made him feel blurry. I have always been a bad sleeper, usually the worst happens when i'm in a complete state of worry. Try anything, maybe some soothing music and a nice bath before hand to put you in a relaxed mood for bed. Good luck!
It takes a couple of sucky days to get your body back on a semi-regular schedule. No naps. No caffeine. Try some chamomile tea that has been steeped for 15 minutes before bed. The worst is that first day when you get almost no sleep before you have to get up...but if you can muddle through, you should be able to get more sleep the next night. The rotten thing is that you have to be cautious about sleeping in since that can put you back to the starting point.
