So yeah...it's almost time for me to pick my major. I've already racked up enough credits to make it possible to finish a double major within a four-year schedule. I know for sure one of those majors will be in English, but I'm not sure about the other. I have two distinct possibilities: - English & Political Science - Sounds good on paper, but I don't know if I'm married to law school just yet. - English & Marine Biology - Always loved the ocean and it's inhabitants, and always did well in Biology. But I would NOT look forward to satisfying chemistry requirement. Plus, exactly what would I be doing after college? - English & Spanish - Just my two best subjects from highschool. Again, something I've thought about before is going to Guatemala to teach Spanish Literacy, but I don't know how sure I am that such a thing is ever going to happen. My big plans tend to be hype. I know this is supposed to be a "personal desicion" (and in the end, it will be), but I just wanted to see if anyone had anything to say on the subject, experience, etc.
If you're thinking of becoming a lawyer, it might be better to major in History or maybe Business (depending on the law you want to study) and take Political Science classes for a lot of your electives. I was considering law awhile back, and one of my mom's friends who used to be a law school professor said that the problem with Political Science was that everyone who wants to be a lawyer studies Political Science as an undergraduate- logically, of course, but the point is that even if you're a fabulous student, when it comes time to go to Law school, you'll have a lot of competition. Law school is competitive enough. Marine Biology sounds really interesting, but it really depends on what you're going to college for. Are you going to college to study something that really interests you, or to get a job? Don't worry, if the second is the answer, I won't judge you. That's why most people go (including myself, to a minor degree. Kind of going for both). If it's just to study something that interests you, I say go for it. Just get through Chemistry, and then concentrate on what you like. If you want to get a job, I might point out that unless you have the overwhelming desire to teach, there's not a lot you can do without a PHD. How long were you planning on staying in college? These days, you can't lose with Spanish. I expect to live to see more Americans speak Spanish than English. A lot of businesses, especially in New York and Florida, are starting to require you to be bilingual. I want to be helpful, but frankly, I'm having the same problem as you are right now! I'm going to need to declare a major soon, and I'm just not sure what I want to do. I thought I wanted to be a teacher, but after listening to some of my dad's experiences as a college professor at a community college (which a lot of people treat like a high school), I'm not sure I have the stomach for it. Maybe law, but I'm like you: just not sure. And it's an awful lot of work for someone who doesn't know. Maybe cultural studies. Maybe sociology. Maybe music. Maybe maybe. *sigh*
English & Political Science...just because the others wouldn't interest me at all. LOL. Way to go on being an English major. I sort of wish I decided to stay one.
