Where the hell do you find them and roughly how much would they cost? I've been wanting one for years but have no idea where you can find them too.

they'll tell you everything you need to know. And have a huge classified section and forums.
Since I take it you'd want the old split or bay window vans not the 80's square Vanagons then you're looking at something from 1979 being the newest, in other words lots of work unless you can find one in really good condition and then you'll be paying big money (most of the time). As for ayahuasca's question on whether they're reliable, yes and no. Yes if you do lots of preventative matainence and know your stuff and no if you just drive it hard and put it away wet. You always have to be ready for the unexpected.

Vw`s rock. Its a cult thing for sure but if you can work on your push-mower you can probably do most anything v dub related, great on gas, parts are higher, rebuilds are more freq, they cant pull much other than itself.

Other than that they are great.

Ive had several, dont think I will have another cause they just dont fit my current needs.

I posted this a week ago in another thred.....If you are gonna travel Loooong distance inna "Camper" of some sort read this.

To Buy...Older(85 or Older) R.V's, School bus convertons(sp) Trucks (Delirvery) You can get one of theese for between $1000-5000 for the most part, but keepin them on the road is a test in resorcefulness! Tires, engine parts, trannys, rear ends ect arew mostly truck or "R.V" peices...Mucho Mo Spendy! then u add the day to day "Care and Feeding" of some of the "Le Chatau Bovines" That fall into this list.....

To Run....Simple,An 82-89 Chevy Conversion van...Lots out there for between 1500-4500 In really good shape, owend by folk hwo have the means to keep them nice, generally well matained,VERY EASY TO GET PARTS FOR!!!!! ANYWHERE!!! If you cant get a Chevy part....Fuelish,well sorta 12-16 mpg, but a Bus or R.V isn't even gonna touch that kinda gas milage generally

And a Post Script....If you don't know a "Dwell Meter" from a "Static Timing light" or want to ever understand the statment"What is the valve lash setting for the No.3 Exaust Valve,on a 71 1600 dual port, with a .009?"

    NO VOLKSWAGENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This is not to say that V.W.'s are a bad thing....But they are gittin old and most have had a rough life! Parts are spendy if u have to buy them new,But if you Can turn a wrench,read,scrounge...Well you get my point.

From someone who's been there, hope this helps

Tour rigs I"v had at one time or another...
    67 Chevy 109 Sportvan
    67 Chevy K1500 Pickup/Overhead Camper
70 VW Van...1835 cc Freeway Flyer
    71 Ford B-600/Supeiror School Bus Conversion...72 Pass/Fullsize
    73 VW Van...2 Liter/MSD eletronic ignition/Weber 40 IDF Carbs/Headers....85 Down I-10 ALL Day Long!

alot of vws have major problems
approach a vw club and find out them
beware see through rust and buggerised cv joints, leaky seals, buggered up doors
a sale through a club member might be better but as i said before, find out some info about them before spending any money

Here's a site showing the re-make of the VW Westfalia. My mom asked this guy at a Volkswagen retailer about it, and it's supposedly coming out some tme in the next few years. Here it is: http://www.verdier.ca/

As cool as that is, it's not coming out anytime soon. That site has been up for a couple of years now and the rumor that it's going to be made has continuosly been shot down, including by VW reps. The Euorovan is no longer being manufacturered because nobody in north america wanted to pay $50,000 for a mininvan. Due to the concept being extremly complicated and intricate the cost would be astronomical and the people that would be able to afford it are not of a demographic that goes camping in national parks on the weekends.

A friend told me that for some reason they stopped making and selling them in Europe, yet continued to make and sell them in Mexico for about a decade afterwards.
I think I would kill for a VW van if and when I go back to the states - it would solve so many of my problems. So in about 3 months, if all goes well with everything and I have another research study or two under my belt, I'm a gonna be looking for one.

I've been wanting to get either a Bus or a Vanagon. My van of choice when I was a teenager was a Chevy Astro. I've owned two, one finally broke down after three years of hard traveling, and the other is still running after two years.

one day in the future some one is going to realise that they can make alot of money making a replica (of the original) vw kombi with all the stuff like air bags and a chassis designed for impacts etc etc. until then we are going have to put uop with the usual boring fare that they churn out. my fantasy is that the new version whilst looking like the old will be far more reliable and be a hybrid design.

no i don't think so. the koreans are able to create vehicles that are cheap, reliable and well designed. the germans lost their way with this and this is why they no longer produce cars for the masses. the golf is not what you'd call cheap and compared to my car its alot dearer to run and maintain. maybe it will up to the koreans to come up with the goods.

I used to have an '87 Vanagon, with the exception of a water pump and radiator that died as I was leaving New York once, It ran like a dream for like 4 years. Then I sold it and now have a Toyota. Ebay is great for VW Vans and Buses and if you are ever in Maine or New Hampshire, pick up an "Uncle Henry's" or check out www.unclehenrys.com
It's a sell it yourself magazine outta Maine that you can usually find some decent vehicles in, not to mention everything else you might need.
