If I'm not a vegetarian am I still considered a true hippie? I was a vegetarian for 3 months but I started getting sick and my mom made me eat meat. Right now I only eat meat 3-4 times a week. Again back to my question, am I still considered a true hippie if I'm not a vegetarian. -Cassius
Being a hippie isn't measured simply by whether or not you are a vegetarian. Hipness is like .... you get points for being cool. The more points you get, the more of a hippie you are. Hippies enjoy love, and sex, and peace, and balance, and harmony, and wholesomeness, and kindness, and acceptance, non-discrimination, and probably a thousand other words that I don't have the patience to list. If you're not a vegetarian, you simply don't get all the points for kindness and equality and acceptance and non-speciesism, whatever you might call that. If you are legitimately sick, one can't blame you for eating meat to survive. That being said, I highly doubt that you are legitimately sick on a well-balanced vegetarian diet. Unless you have some sort of serious, complicated condition, where you MUST eat meat, and nothing else can be used as a substitute, you got sick simply because your diet was not correctly balanced. People survive on diets that are far more insane than a mere vegetarian diet -- not to mention that a well-balanced vegetarian diet is, according to all major medical sources, healthiER than a meat-inclusive diet. Usually, saying that one cannot be vegetarian is little more than an excuse. Of course, there are exceptions -- my father, for instance, is making a transition away from meat, but at one point he was quite literally on his death bed because of candida albicans, a severe full-body yeast infection. Now, his diet is even more restrictive than that of my vegan diet, but unless he follows this strict diet, he can't even get out of bed in the morning because his back is so swollen and immobile. But, he still tries, and that's what you get points for. (Of course my dad has no hip points in any other category *lol* he's a total bush-loving conservative who has no regard for the honour of others -- I hate him, but that doesn't mean I don't give credit where it's due.)
i agree on that. being a hippie isnt just about not eating a dead animal what i would say is, try to cut down on meat as much as possible, and when you do chow down on the flesh, eat meat that has come from a supplier that treats its animals with basic dignity and respect (ie free-range chickens). it may be hard to avoid factory farm meat, but if you can find organic stuff, than go for it on the other hand though, i would strongly encourage you give vegetarianism (or mabye veganism!) another go.
She can't be a true moron if she knows how to spell! While it's true that a high percentage of hippies are vegetarian, it's also true that a lot of them go get a big mac when they have the munchies. Just like it's true that not all hippies have long hair, wear tie-dye, do drugs, grow their own food or drop out. A few of them even voted for Bush!
Are you kidding? You can't be considered a hippy if you voted for Bush-you can't even be considered human if you voted for him!
what defines a human is the genoma, not political ideas.....and now, so that my ears aren't pulled for being out of the forum subject, i would like to say that I love cabbage soup.....
You can be whatever you want to be. Dont waste your time labeling yourself, just be. People call me hippish and I love to sink my little teeth into meat every now and then!
I bet you that there were berly any vegitarins during the orginal hippie days. Guess how many of your favorite hippie rock stars were vegitarins.
Noone can tell you if you're a hippie or not...and there are no special rules for if you are or not. It's just a label, and it means a different thing to everyone...so forget about it and be you. A lot of 'hippies' I know not only eat meat, they generally prefer it to the alternatives.
That's the trouble with labels, they limit us as much as they define us. I gave up trying to label myself years ago. Nowadays I just say that I have some hippie tendencies ... like I have some Goth tendencies and probably quite a few others. Just be and learn to accept yourself, even if you can't love yourself.
I honestly think there should be a sticky at the top of this forum saying that in order to be a hippie, don't conform to your preconcieved notions of hippies. It might save us from these bi-weekly posts of "am I a hippie if...?". Sorry. It's hot and I am cranky.
