I want to get dreads but I want to know some information first. What is the cost for hair that a little bit past your sholders? How long will it take? Special shampoos? Can you get them out without ruining your hair?

It dosen't cost anything. You just get a friend to help you.

Go to www.dreadheadhq.com and use that method for best results but please ignore all the product bullshit because thats exactly what it is. BULLSHIT. That whole wax thing is a complete waste of time and money although the soap is OK. A friend of mine bought a bunch of that crap and ended up giving it to me.

On the site they'll tell you that you put the wax in right away but if you do that then your hair will never lock up and you'll have a waxy mess in your hair which you can't possibly want....anyway go to the site and read about the backcombing method or just stop brushing your hair and make sure you don't use conditioner or shampoos with moisture added. You want your hair to get frizzy and weird no matter which way you dread and be sure to stay away from to much fragrance and color in hair products as well as these will get left behind in your dreads and be nasty.

Otherwise dreads are very clean and sanitary as long as you make it that way. Don't ever let anyone tell you that dreads are dirty because thats only so if you let it be.

I wish i had went for it when i was 15. Go for it! I hope this isn't off topic as i'm sure this info will be of interest to you too.

Can anyone tell me of any experience they had once they got dreads in relation to employment!?

i know this isn't a very hippy-like question but i have responsibilities. any feedback would be ace :)

Sprout's had people turn him away at the door without ever even thinking about letting him fill out an application. If you want dreads, make sure you've already got a steady job, or live somewhere it'll be pretty acceptable. backward, redneck, mullet towns are definitely NOT where you wanna be looking for a job at if you have locks.

Alot of people told me to stay away form the wax. I'm probably going to get my dreads in 2 days. My friend's going to do them. I saw some one come into my work with dreads and i asked them what they used and they said carrot oil. Anyone herd of this method? does it work? What else or better ideas do you have to bring down the frizzy extra hair other than wax?

jesum crow, people. there's a billion topics on dreadlocks on these forums. do a little searching!

don't go to dreaheadhq. terrible products, bad advice. go to www.knottyboy.com instead. much better.

Try sleeping with a stocking or scarf or something on your head. Also, rolling the dreads in between your hands starting at the top and working your way down seems to help. We also put just a wee bit of pure aloe in sprout's locks to help keep it soft and keep it from frizzing up.

Inbloom, knottyboy is no different than dreadheadhq. They're all just out to sell their products. Everyone is gonna have their own opinion on the matter, some people swear by wax and rubber bands and end up with nice looking dreads. I guess it all just depends on how much time and effort you're willing to put into it.

For the love of GOD don't use rubber bands! I say that backcombing works but that is all that the dreadhead and knottyboy type sites are worth. Otherwise as mentioned before the natural method is wonderful as well, as I done both.

    good luck!

i personally don't like the just "natural" style of dreads. the tend to look greasy and goopy and...yuck. i don't see what peoples problem is with "making them." you take a comb and backcomb them to help them into sections, and leave them to their own from there. (with the exception of rolling them) oooh, that's so unnatural.

in my experiences, the more that i tired to do ANYTHING to my locks, the more they wouldnt do it. it would work for a little while, but then undo itself eventually. when things naturally happen, it´ll never go back on itself.

i even told myself that i wanted my locks to stop combining - that i was gonna pull them apart if anymore did. well, a couple of months later, i´ve got a congo in the back of my head that´s made up of like, 7 dreads (2 or 3 of which are already congos of 2 or 3 dreads). so i learned that dreads CANNOT be controlled, manipulated, etc.

Since everyone is saying to stay away from wax; is there any good alternatives i:e less messy? I slready know aloe. What is the purpose of wax anyways? Doe it make the dreads smoother looking?

JUST REMEMBER! that should you tire of the locks, shaving your head is the best way to move on.

Yea i did what you just said, seperated them and let em do what they want with a bit of guidence. Often that what people mean when they say "natural" it basicaly means not wax/products to shape/control the dreads because then the locking of the hair is a)forced and b) not going to actually happen propperly for quite some time.
Its down to the personal oppinion of "natural" locks. i dont care f locks are "natural" or not but i must say they look really greasy if you use wax and do end up smelling, thas why i sujjust no wax. its got nothing to do with the "hardcore" ness of "natural dreads" over waxed ones.

one of my friends has had 2 or 3 or 4 different sets of locks, and with his most recent set, he took one or two of his old locks (that were cut off and put in a shoebox) and sewed them onto his existing dreads. it actually looked kinda cool

so its seller can make money. that´s it. all it really does is make your hair stick together so it LOOKS like it´s knotted when it really isnt. well, it kind of is if you backcomb, but the wax is like holding them in limbo.
