There has been talk of enforcing laws against knowingly hiring illegal immigrants in order to discourage that very action. However, the companies will not be the ones who will actually pay the fines in the end. They may pay it up front, but we, as consumers, will pay for it in the end. Think about it. Many companies already do it. When they get fined for whatever reason, such as illegal dumping or making people work overtime without paying them for it, they pass that on to their customers in the form of higher prices for goods and services.

For example: If the car wash I work at gets penalized for allowing illegal aliens to work, the cost of washes and detailing like hand waxing or carpet cleaning will go up 2-10 dollars or more to offset the fine.

What needs to be done is to pass laws that prohibit businesses from raising prices on the cost of goods and services to their customers. After all, the customers are not the ones who broke the immigrant hiring law, so they should not have to pay for it. It should be similar to sexual harassment law that prohibits a company from demoting or firing a complaining employee for six months after the complaint is filed.

The rate at which this country is going there may not be any consumers left to buy their products, no matter what the price. At least consumers should be made aware who is hiring illegals and who is not, then if we want to pay more and support the workers who are legal, we'll have that choice. Myself, I'm willing to pay more for products/services from establishments who are not hiring the illegals. As far as agricultural workers, I read somewhere on the Internet that only 2% of the illegals are involved in agriculture. So, please, no more scare stories about a head of lettuce going up to $3 a head if we crack down on illegals.
