this thread is deadicated to poor_old_dad this year i have a yellow boy, a purple russian, a plain old 'champion' hybrid and a couple of heritage cheery toms. i was too busy/lazy to start from seed this year, picked up a couple of heritage plants at the good nursery and then flaked out and picked up the other ones from canadian tire how 'bout the rest of y'all? whatcha growin?
I can't stand to see a thread with no replies... no tomatoes for me. My littlest one is allergic to nightshades. But if I could, I'd have those little yellow pear-shaped tomatoes my Gramma always grew. And tomatillos, those are soooo yummy!!
Namaste I am very humbled and greatly honored. Tomatoes are one of my main money makers, they help keep my little self-sustaining homestead going. I am always experimenting with varities and with growing methods. My main three tomatoes are: Brandywine - THE BEST TASTING TOMATO in most tests for many, many years, Stupice - for me, here, this is the earliest, best producing, latest (keeps going - I've picked fresh ones for Thanksgiving), most reliable - my main crop. Also is a cherry tomato names "Peacevine" - high in Vitamin C and is uniquely high in gamma-amino butyric acid, a body sedative that calms jitters, and with a name like Peacevine - how could a hippie not grow it. Extremely productive, indeterminate, and a real good money maker. I don't want to come across as some sort of big business type, talking about money maker, etc., but when you are trying to be a self-sustaining small farm / homestead making profit, not just money is something you must pay attention to. When I have more time I'll tell you about one of my first big tests after moving here. 18 varieties, 6 plants each plus 17 varieties of pepper, six plants each, all from seed. Over the years I've seriously tried over 50 tomatos (I've grown many more just to see what they looked like, tasted, grew, etc., just messing around). Also some may find my experiments with kelp and other organic fertilizers interesting. Peace, poor_old_dad
Well, I'm not an expert on tomatoes, but in Spain the best tomato is Raf, (nothing to do with the Royal air force of Uk). I'ts partially green even ripe, and is tasty and sweet. With olive oil, first pic, is delicious.
Big Boy, and Better Boy for me, grape tomatoes and plum tomatoes for the ones in the family who dont like 'em big and juicy. Home grown tomaters Home grown tomaters Ain't nothing in the world Like some home grown tomaters.
I've got some Black Krim, Heirloom cherry, Heirloom Orange(?) and Early Girl varieties. I usually dry farm them to bring out the flavour, once established I only need to water them like once a month. Started from seed.
P.o.d. - they are not green grape- they are to be the red grape tomatoes. We just got the plants in the ground on May 30. hubbie built a raised garden bed on the side of our hill/backyard and we still dont have it full of dirt yet. because of the sewer lines we have to wheelbarrow dirt down the hill. So, we are a bit late planting. We are making our own tomato "teepees" I call them. Tomato cage kind of thing for support. We make a teepee with 3 long sticks from the woods, tie with twine at the top, tie shorter sticks around the outside about 4" from the bottom and then again between those sticks and the top of the teepee, which provide support for it. They look cool.
I was boring this year, didnt search out interesting varieties. Tomatos are Oregon (something) supposedly fairly early full size cherry tomatos (sweet million) and red grape tomatos Next year, I'll try and get more organized, get some heirloom varieties... start earlier..
Andrenio, YUM!!!! We are growing: Mortgage Lifters (the BEST tomato ever for taste, but it isn't really disease resistance, so you have to get as many as you can before Blight sets in in early September.) Rutgers An other Heirloom, but more disease resistance Mr Stripey Yellow Boy or Golden Boy. (Yellow full size tomatoes) Two varities of Grape, Juliette and something else Sweet 100 or Sweet 1000, I forget Yellow Pear, little pear shaped yellow cherry tomatoes Beefmaster Amish Paste An Italian Sauce Tomato, Our 92 year old Italian neighbor gave it to us, the man is a tomato saint. He's been gardenig since about 1922 or so, maybe earlier than that even.
I only have to types unfortunately; big beef and better boy. I usually grow every variety I can get my hands on, but I started too late in the season (I just finished planting everything today). I may try and get some cherry tomatoes if I can find somewhere in my yard to put them.
I don't know how many of ya'll saw last month's Mother Earth News, but there was a real good article about mail ordering heirloom, hard to find, or gourmet tomato plants. There's a list of 17 suppliers, a couple have no minumum order and one ships only in Canada. So if you wanted to grow a pair of Arkansas Traveler, a couple Mortgage Lifters, a German Red and a Cherokee Purple, you can. Anyway, some folks may find it interesting: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Organic_Gardening/2006_April_and_May/First_Class_Tomatoes I'm going to put a copy of this in the "Seeds or Plants" tread too. Peace, poor_old_dad
I don't know anywhere that sells plants or seeds and accept PayPal, but I'll check. Of the list in the Mother Earth News, the only one in Canada is Holesonline.com (no, it's not a porn site). Peace, poor_old_dad
thanks for the link to the article. i'm so blessed where i live, it's easy to find heirloom varieties here. ps, another amazing canadian company with great ethics and lots of heirloom varieties: http://www.saltspringseeds.com/
I have grown the Purple Russian or maybe was it Black Russian? Anyway they were the worste looking but best tasting ones I have ever grown. These were grown from an assortment packet of heirloom tomato seeds so I could not be sure. There were some of those Green Zebra (remember from the TV show Pie In The Sky?) Actually they were more yellow green rather than pure fgreen in colour. I have also grown Tommy Toes that were a bit over-rated.
For PayPal, try Laurel's Heirloom Tomato Plants: http://www.heirloomtomatoplants.com/ But, I don't know if they ship to Canada. Peace, poor_old_dad
I'll send an email to them/her/him. Thanks for checking that out for me. I would have done it but I've been busy all day! Thanks again.!
