I had wanted to go veggie for a long long time before I actually did. The motivation that kept me working toward the goal of never eating another piece of meat was to keep reminding myself of all the images of the cows and pigs and the chickens and the things that these and other animals have to go through to become dinner. It would make me sick and want to cry. And after doing that for so long I actually got to the point where meat makes sick to even look at it. Going veggie doesnt usually happen overnight. For me it was a process and I have finally reached the point where I know I will never consume a piece of meat for the rest of my life. I am so happy about that:)
Think about why you want to be a veg...find the things that motivate you to do that and keep them fresh in your mind at all times and that will help you.

Start slowly if you have to, make small changes by substituting meat with veggie products. There are lots of websites to visit that offer great recipes and motivation.

Just think of all the good you'll be doing for the environment and how you'll be helping stop cruelty to animals.

    Good luck!!:)

veganoutreach and goveg.com do a fantastic vegetarian starter kit. Between them they have plenty of persuasive info to get you started. cok.net 's stater kit is my personal fave.

You can get free paper copies for the sites or just read them online.

    Good luck :)

I've been kind of interested also (I used to be a veggie, but became anemic, and my parents wouldn't let me leave the house until I ate some chicken - I was 16...) Is there any way around the lack of protein, other than tofu, because I hate that stuff? I also have a pre-diabetic condition, will that be affected if I cut meat from my diet? Any help would be terrific... :D

as far as i know you can get tons of protein from nuts and from soy products. and i agree with you... tofu isn't the greatest!

my motivation for veggi-ness was the peta website and their videos, they just make me so mad!!

I've wanted to go veggie since I was 11 or something but somehow never managed to do it, then last year in November we watched a film about how cows are usually treated, and that was enough to make me decide.
I noticed it's good to tell somebody you're going veggie (for example your parents ;)), my first tries failed because I was only trying to sneak around meat as much as possible.
Last year I finally had the courage to tell my parents. After some (smaller) arguments they accepted it and in the first weeks when I thought "This isn't good for anything. Why not justgo back?" another voice in my head told me: "Be strong, they'll never take you serious again if you give up now." :p
No I've made it and I'm happy about bing veggie! Would never want to eat meat again and the feeling's getting stronger with every piece of meat that I see and every nice veggie I meet. :)

rain in summer knows exactly whats goin on.

first tell everyone that your going veggie. make a big deal out of it and call them murderers everytime you see them eat meat. that way you'll never be able to live with the shame of eating meat and going back on what you said

LOL extereme perhaps, but there is some truth in that.

My parents thought I was going through a phase, there were plenty of other reasons why I was veggie but part of it was not giving them the satisfaction of my giving up.

I strongly urge anyone to read and learn about health and nutrition. It really does set you up well because...
    A) You'll know what you need to eat, thus avoiding any defiences
    B) You will be able to counter dumb arguments like protein defiency *
    C) It helps with the motivation, there won't be any doubt that it's the right thing to do.

    * For the record the average person needs about 50 grams per day. A perfectly acomplishable task for anyone consuming suficent calories. Good sources are eggs, dairy, quorn, soya, beans, nuts etc.
Trust me protein is the least of your worries.

Um, that's kind of funny, but I really HATE people who shove their beliefs down your throat, so I really doubt that I will be like that. I do think it's a good idea to tell people, but I'm not gonna be one of those psycho-veggies who screams "MURDERER!" every time I see someone having a hamburger, any more than I'm gonna cry out "DEMON!" when I see a kid wearing a pentacle. It's just not right, your beliefs are your own, don't cram them down someone's throat (so to speak! )

I agree, that kind of militance never works. Unless of course you want to be universally loathed.

Oh and the kids with pentancles aren't demons. They are eithier goth kids, who don't know the meaning of their symbol and therefore cannot be held accountable.
Or pagans who know exactly what it means. As one myself I can say with authority that we have no affiliation with demons because we don't believe in them.
Of topic I know, but I needed to say it. :)

Yes, I know Pagans don't believe in demons, I used to be one...

It was a joke, darling. It refered to the fact that if I'm not gonna ram my religious convictions down someone's throat, I'm certainly not gonna chew out somebody because they want to eat some steak.

    I'm sorry if I offended you! :(

If you really wanted to be a vegetarian you wouldn't need others to give you a motivation. Why is it that you 'really want to be one'?

if you want to be a vegetarian and need some practical advice on food or whatever, okay.. but you need motivation? No external motivation is going to help you not eating meat anymore.. ever. You have to believe in it for a 100% or you're not going to manage.. it's a lifestyle.. it follows you in the supermarket, in restaurants, when you are eating with friends.

You really have to ask yourself why you are so desperate to becoming a vegetarian..

Maybe you know that it's the right thing to do, but aren't prepared for the extreme change it takes. Suddenly you have to read labels, word for word, very carefully. You have to ask what ingredients for certain so-called "vegetarian" dishes are in restaurants (because they aren't really vegetarian), and sometimes settle for a salad because there's nothing compatable with you diet made there. You have to decline Aunt Who-the-hell-evers "Special" Meatloaf, and hurt her feelings. I've been here before, and it's a pain in the ass. So I can understand needing some motivation. Knowing that eating meat is wrong just isn't enough sometimes. When you are used to it, because you've been doing it for awhile, it is second nature, but it's hard to take the first step.

START BY LIMITING YOURSELF TO SEAFOOD! THIS MAKES IT MUCH MUCH EASIER, I THINK.

I agree.. but I'm trying to say that at the end of the day, the only thing that'll keep you going is a strong internal believe in that what you're doing feels right for you.
The original poster just seemed a bit.. hm.. I dunno.. like she wants to be a vegetarian but needs others to convince her.. maybe I'm wrong, but I'm curious for why she 'really wants to be a vegetarian'.. it's not hip, it's not cool.. and yes, you are bound to run into a lot of problems and dillema's (how strictly veggie are you, what about by-products etc. etc.)..

Oh, I totally feel you there, either you want to do it for you or you don't want to do it, period. My problem is that I have enough trouble keeping Kosher laws, although if I went veggie, I'd have no problems at all, b/c most of the Kosher laws apply to the preparation of meat. I'm kind of worried about health issues, I take vitamins daily, but aren't you not getting the same nutrition as you do from meat?

By the way, I like that idea about limiting your meat intake to seafood, I think I'm going to try that first, and go from there. Here goes nothing!!! *grin*

Nah I'm okay, it's nothing personal. I just didn't want anyone getting the wrong idea. I totally agree about not preaching, and only discuss religion with intrested parties and/or if provoked.

    Just to avoid misunderstandings:

I wasn't talking about preaching, just about telling your parents and maybe some friends what you're about to do.

I also hate preaching, there's no sense in it.
