HEre in asutralia there is a huge debate going on over the Free Trade agreement between US and Australia.

I was wondering what you, majority liberal,American people think about it?

If you dont know waht it is, please post that too, because i wouldnt be surprised if its a very small issue over in US

The bigger issue over here is NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement). I haven't even heard anything about the US and Australian free trade agreement.

I could go on and on about how the US isn't honouring NAFTA in Canada either but I just don't feel like ranting and raving today. I must be getting sick. Or it's all the rain.... Damn....

Proponents say that free trade allows the people to get the best of both countries (price, quality etc. )

The reality seems to be that the corporations get the best of either country (labour prices, environmental regs, etc.)

Id have to say most of the people in America are to involved into others things to know or care about the Us Australian free trade,

half are sitting in front of the tv,
half are trying to figure out how the hell our president got there

all i have to say on this subject is that not too while ago i bought some oranges. American oranages to be exact.. and because it wasn't orange season i suppose they sucked!!!

but yesterday i bought some new oranges that looked healthy and sweet. i noticed the sticker on them and they were from Austrailia.

so if this an example of things to come, then by all means i approve of the free trade acces given to Austrailia in US markets

most people arent educated enough on free trade to form valid opinions. just because it has a nice title doesnt make it good. the patriot act sounds like a good thing to implement..i mean patriotism is important, right?...but the patriot act has nothing to do with patriotism, just like free trade has nothing to do with free trade. i think there should be an open market between all countries, i think most trade embargos should be illegal, and i think every country has the right to subsidize anything they want. so i say bah on the free trade agreements. their only used as a bargaining chip, and a step closer to globalization

For 2 parties to enter into this sort of agreement then there has to be something in it for them. Just who gets the biggest slice of the pie and who gets nailed in the arse is of concern to me. I like pie, not so much of the other thing for me thanks.

I just cant help but think Little Jonny Howard has australia bent over ready to take the big push from George Bush and the American Pharmacutical Companies.

If it seems to good to be true then it probably is!

in my history class yesterday, my teacher spoke for a most of the lesson about the trade agreement, its alot better listening to him with important and interesting stuff than reading about Australian history (just finished the Russian section last semester and last year was the American and German sections)
the free trade agreement put Australian cattle farmers out of bussiness (i think that what i heard)
