    1) go to Start Menu\Programs\Startup, delete unnecessary programs;
    2) Run->regedit, find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    delete unnecessary programs (only when u are sure)
    3) run Services from Control Panel, dont autostart unnecessary services (only when u are sure)

    go to add/remove programs in windows explorer and delete the unwanted programs that the internet automatically downloads.

    I would suggest you download Bit defender and get rid of Norton.
    I have installed hundreds of computers and networks in offices and
    the problem with Norton is simply this: they are more interested in getting you to upgrade next year than they are in fixing their broken software. It is a peice of clever adware that occassionally detects a virus and deletes it if easy enough -

    It's so common for peoples' machines to be eaten up with spyware, malware, viruses, trojans, rootkits, and so forth, that there are now consultants who specialize in removing the shit.

    If people bothered to take a little time to read around no overpriced consultant would be necessary. There are three programs I have found which together eliminate virtually all threat of spyware, adware and malware (fancy names for the same thing as far as I'm concerned).

    Each of the programs is free to download and regularly updateable.

    These are:

    1. Adaware
    2. Spybot Search & Destroy
    3. SpywareBlaster

    The first two are scanner/cleaners and the last is a sentry program which (as I understand it) just runs in the background (using almost no CPU resources) and blocks the most pernicious spyware from even taking root in your system.

    Install and run these three in succession (always checking for update first) every couple of days or once a week at the minimum and you shouldnt ever be bothered by spyware (et al.) again.

    On an added note: If you get a "bad checksum" error message when retrieving and installing updates for Spybot Search & Destroy, try changing the download source (drop down menu) to one of the "Safer Networking" sites.

    Good luck.

    That sums it up well. I think Spyware Blaster sets up IE with a list of sites/active x things to block, while Spyware Guard tries the resident protection thing. Spyware Guard is a little dated now though, Windows Defender integrates that resident protection better.

    Careful/sensible browsing, good AV (AVG, AVast, AntiVir for free, SAV Corporate Ed 10 is very good too), a firewall (XPSP2 and/or ZoneAlarm?) all combine to help keep a system "safe" from those malwares. Alternative browsers to IE6 - FireFox 1.5 is great, Netscape 8.1 can be speedy using IE's rendering engine and has a good anti-spyware feature too!

    Adaware and Spybot have updates weekly (Weds and Friday)! They are not good at resident protection though.

    what can u expect from Micro$oft??? they dont reall seem to care too much about security mostly money :|

    If your looking for a good Antivirus program with a low memory footprint go check out Avast! its very professional and its free ^_^

    If u dont use your compy too much for games and such you should look into getting a mac. Much faster, and none of this Bullshit we have to put up with when using Winblows.
