I just found this book hidden behind some other books on a book shelf, hidden away since I was 4 or 5. Yet reading again after so many years almost made me cry. I dunno why, it's just such a positive story. To me it sort of represents what we go through in life.
It starts out with birth (the egg) and goes onto how we face the different challenges in life (the various fruits and stuff the caterpillar eats), and in the end, we always become a better person (with the metamorphosis into a butterfly).

I know that's being very simplistic but i think it's the perfect 1st book for children. I'm definitly starting my kids out on that book.

A couple years ago the book got a lot of publicity when good old G.W. was asked what his favorite children's book was as a kid. He answered "the very hungry catipilar"... which unfortunatly wasn't published until he was much older.

That, and the rainbow fish were my favorites...I think because the artistic styles were so different :)

It's a great little book. In addition to showing the transformation of a butterfly it also reenforces concepts such as days of the week and good nutrition.

    Plus it's cute!

You might want to read it with your kids and then have a week where you tried a taste of all those foods each day.

Minus the stomach ache of course.

Then you might want to study with your kids other things that change into other things like pollywogs.
