Funny thing... the history of the Earth People born for 80 odd years, maybe less. Some people travel the globe but what does that prove? At least they have the ambition Suzy Masterson waits on tables, in a town of 700. But wheres the fucking fun in that? On second thought, she probably does it for the little slips of paper, with the rich dead men on them. And maybe thats the difference, between obscurity and happiness. Ricky Durkin was born to a father who owned several billion of those slips of paper But did it make him happy? Bobby Durkin Sr. paid for Ricky's school. Sent him to the best and gave a wealthy handshake to the draft man After all, Ricky's life was too promising for a fight over gasoline. But then one day, Ricky changed his hair, and thought to become a painter, So Bobby fuckin' put em out and they havent talked since.. Nick O' Rielly, born and raised on the Emerald Isle Came to the land of of the free and the home of the brave Made a good living, and had two sons, he couldnt have been more proud. They died fighting terror. As for consolation, Nick only had to pay 2 dead Washingtons at the pump. Freddy Smits, feels lonely the epitome of teenage angst he applies a balm to his face everyday and hopes the blemishes will leave maybe then a girl will like him and he can throw away his magazines And Freddy's neighbor, Bob Kite a hapless old man, with a forgetful disease he ambles around his house at nite, the ghost of a man and it never gets old If only he could remember, what it was he was looking for. Harold Ferguson wanted to change the world through his writings Funny thing, though, he wasn't picked up So instead he decided to end his living with a hop off the cathedral. But Peggy Baxter thinks thats what everyone needs more of The longhaired white man who stares on the walls. Keeps Peggy and others like her from feeling empty. She died at 45, A happy woman no less She got to see her niece decide to follow the same crucifix at a ripe and naked 3 days old. But was it only just a bit of ordinary water? And if you didn't wake up tommorow, how would you know? And maybe someday, the last John Doe will breathe his last breath And there will be no more money, and there will be no more buildings. And no more planes, to crash into them. And the sun will rise, one last time, and shine on the beach with the last crab, who has no thoughts at all He'll make his way down the sand and on through the city Did the human race happen at all? Or was it just a dream? He made a new home in a littered can of Dr Pepper And somewhere downstream, he died, the dream ended.
I liked it. Makes you realize the futility of it all. As The Verve said in "Bittersweet Symphony," "try to make ends meet/youre a slave to money/then you die" Kind of pathetic when you think about it.
