Me and my boyfriend have decided to move to Colorado in January..he graduates this December with a computer science degree, and we live in Alabama right now, so we're ready to get the hell outta here... I have never been to Colorado before (or anywhere in the west for that matter) and I was just wondering if anyone could help me out with some things...he's looking for jobs in Boulder and Denver...i know it's probably expensive to live in those cities, so do any of yall know any smaller surroundin cities that it might be better to live in? also, i've never had my own place before, so if someone could PM me and let me know their average utilities cost out there, and rent, and some suggestions of where to look for apartments, because i'm completely clueless.. thank yall so much
Qwest DSl and telephone with long distance package: close to $100/ mo rent, 2 bed duplex full basement (the redeeming quality) $900 Xcel energy in a non-heated, non c duplex, $50-80. Winter: $300 and up. yes, up. car insurance is up there, too. cheaper will be east: flat and gross, but cheaper. THe trade off is the gas to drive. Denver has good public transport. Computers are flatline right now, unless you have proven codewriting/design exp. What are you paying now? why Colorado? Would Wyoming work, or do you want the city acoutrements?
wow, thank you so much for all that info...why colorado?? i really don't know...i've actually never even been before, but something just draws me to it..i KNOW without a doubt that that's where i want to be! so, wow, 300/month+....wow! well, i live at home right now, so i don't pay rent..my car insurance is already up there..it's $174/month...gas is crazy here and there is zero public transport. We were looking online the other day at some job websites, and we found several entry level programming jobs..hopefully there will be more in January when we come out there. which site? most of the monster type jobs are headhunters, not real positions. but the newspapers are on line: search Rocky Mountain News or Denver Post. the ad departments and some manangement are combined, but the newsrooms have different culture.
www.craigslist.org/denver and Coloado Springs offer good job hunting resources for free. Also checkout backpage.com go to the Denver or Boulder sections. Cost of living is pretty high in the front range areas thats why I moved back to the baron flatness that is Kansas (KC aint so bad though). Insurance rates are horrible arent they...I was paying around 800+/6 months (21 yo., cheap car, Pueblo/Boulder) now im paying $275/6 months here. Good luck in your Colorado transplant, Wyoming and Utah are viable alternatives, despite Utah's generally conformist attitudes there is some good economic growth going on there and in some of Wyoming too. denver is not my favorite part of colorado, its a big city in in a big empty valley, i would sugest you oped for one of the smaller mountain comunities, they dont pay as much but its cheaper to live there
most of my friends have found that the smaller communities do not equal a better economic situation. You travel farther for groceries, pay more for phone/net/ utilities, entertainment is farther away... Most ski town workers can't really afford to live.
yeah, i wouldn't reccomend any of those smaller mountain towns. there pretty isolated. unless you like that small town feeling. but i suggest finding a place around denver. look in the counties of arvada, wheatridge, and lakewood. it's classic suburbia.

Oh and Happydrivin if you want to look around the Boulder area, check out Lafayette (pretty cheap) Longmont (really cheap but kinda ghetto) or any of the new little subdivisions popping up everywhere. Erie, Superior, Broomfield, Brighton. All have cheap housing available. Good luck!
