Last night I became aware that I was dreaming, at the end of the dream. I started looking around at everything and thought "this is so cool" but after that it started fading. I tried to hold on to it, but I woke up, and it wasn't the middle of the night. It was morning. Can this only occur at the end of your dreams? Grrrr
I find that a lot, too. Once you realize this is a dream you start getting sucked back into conscious thought. I don't know why that is. But I have had some dreams that I knew were dreams which lasted for a while. Those are the best dreams...
It happens because the mind is still groggy. So it holds on to the dream image but it is also waking up. I've woken up, have gone to the bathroom, gotten back into bed and have been able to continue a dream from where I left off. My problem is when I wake up every morning and recognise that the mind is starting to think, that it is continuing the last thoughts before going to sleep. I see at least seven different thought streams and fragments, seeing each merge into separate complete thoughts, layers of thoughts, each one floating above and through each other. If you want to be able to hold onto the recognition that you are dreaming then you may need to first recognise when you are starting to fall asleep, being conscious that unconsciousness is befalling your mind. Just watch your thoughts as you go to sleep. You'll eventually probably be able to recognise your thoughts as you wake up.
Ive read that if you think your starting to wake up, you should imagine your spinning in circles in the dream. Ive tried this once or twice and it does help. There are some articles about lucid dreaming on totse.com i think - have a look.
ive had this happen to me a few times recently as well. although, when i was younger and had nightmares i would sometimes realize the complete stupidity of whatever horrible situation i was in (in the dream) and realized i was dreaming. at that point if it was a nightmare i would like 'imagine' myself going into a corner, crouching down, and opening my eyes as hard as i could. somehow this usuallly helped and woke me up from my nightmare.
try looking at your hands to stabilize everything. then look at the closest object, then back to your hands. repeat until you have a fully stabilized view of the world in front of you.
Yesterday I was awarer that I was dreaming for a long time before I woke up! In the dream, one of my friends was going to a school, and she kept talking about how they all got to meet Freddie Mercury their Senior year. That made me stop and think... am I dreaming? Because Freddie died in '91. It was cool! I went and talked to people to see if it was any different and it really wasn't. It seems like knowing your dreaming and being conscious are really different. Even if you do know your dreaming, it isn't always on your mind in the dream, and you don't always have full control, at least from my experience. The dream still controls you to an extent.
well, there are varying levels of lucidity. maybe you just weren't at a high level. the higher the level, the more concious one is. presumably there is no cap to this level, but who knows?
yeah, i often have lucid dreams where i know i'm dreaming, and i'm in complete control. for me it ends up becoming the ultimate day dream. it's like day dreaming, but your actually there and you feel like your doing it...if that makes any sense. i also will wake up from a dream, and then go back into it. it's all about training your mind.
