I was outside most of today and yesterday, and got such a bad sunburn. I was wearing SPF 30 (As I'm fair skinned and that's the only thing that ever worked) and STILL got burned. Does my being pregnant make my sunscreen less effective? My belly and my feet and my face are the only things that didn't really get any kind of color (Which I don't understand as I was barefoot and in a bikini.... )
I got the burn out, but I'm still red....and definitely don't want this to happen again....so, should I move up in SPF or just find a sunscreen for pregnant mamas?

I burn no matter the SPF, and pregnancy always made it worse. There's not much you can do aside from staying in the shade, I think SPF over 30 isn't much more effective anyway.

I always burn too. The only sunscreen I've found to work at all is the Waterbabies brand. I use the SPF 65+ stuff... not because I think it works any better, but because at least for me... it works period. I have to reapply it every 90 minutes or so, because it wears off or loses potency or something.

What works better than anything for me, is staying out of the sun from 10-2, and wearing a long sleeved shirt (I have one of those with a built in SPF factor) and a hat when I know I'm gonna be out for more than a few minutes. It's probably not what you wanted to hear, but it works.
    love,
    mom

Staying out of the sun is just not an option. :p I'm an outdoors kinda gal and now that it's sunny, I don't want to waste the beautiful sunshine sitting inside when I could be out gardening or playing with my dogs.
I'll try the Waterbabies 65+ SPF. That will hopefully work. Plus, I have plenty of big, floppy hats. I'll break those babies out and give em a try.

Just remember to drink a ton of water. Dehydration will bring about contractions quickly!

Remember sunscreen goes bad, it is good to replace it every season. Also, Applying it 30 min prior to sun exposure then re-applying after sweating, swimming or 60 min or so. I put it on before I get dressed before I go out in the sun that way I know I have a good coat on and I streak less. Oh yeah paba free for preggo mamas!

I burned sooooo bad when I was pregnant, way worse than usual....one day i actually turned purple. I was going to suggest the same thing about the baby sunscreen.

I can only use either Coppertone or Nutragena Sensitive Skin sunscreen. Anything else gives me wheeing and swollen itchy eyes. It is hard to find. It has a different ingredient in it than the other ones, even the "baby" ones, which also cause a reaction in me.

When I was pregnant with Sage I put in the entire garden in one day, with only one application of screen and got that "Mask of Pregnancy" which has faded but not totally gone. That was 7 year ago.

some women when they're pregnant, get weird discolorations on their faces...they generally go away after you have your baby...guess maggie was an exception ;)
have you ever hear of the linea negra (sp?), or otherwise known as the line that goes down the belly? It's kinda the sdame thing.
Oddily enough, I never got the line down my belly when i was pregnant, but i got it AFTER I had Leane...i have no clue why that happened. it's gone now, though.

Right. It is a pigmentation, caused, they think, by more active melanin while you are pregnant. (Could be related to the fact that many moms get burned more easily when they are pregnant.) I think mine may not have faded, due to hormones, as I started perimenopause not long after Sage was born. I don't know.

    Here's a link

I was never on HRT, but I think the hormones after I had Sage, freaking out due to PeriMenopause may have caused it to stay. Mine isn't too noticable anymore, but it was when it first happened and for about 2 years after Sage was born, but I know it's there now. I tried the hydroquninone treatment,(After Sage weaned, it really isn't dangerous, just that I usually wouldn't use a drug, unless it was for a medical reason, while nursing) and it made me dizzy. I am not ready for a chemical peel (as I am olive skinned and I don't want scarring) and I don't even know if I would do that to my face, so I don't know if I will do anything about it.

I burnt really badly when I was pregnant too. I'm olive skinned and I NEVER burn, but the first time out last summer I was a lobster. I assumed it had to be hormonal or something. I had the linea negra and my belly button turned brown! When it popped out I had the funniest brown nubbin! It took until just a few months ago to finally sort of flake away.

Re-apply often, and also you have to put it on pretty thick... (this isn't meant specifically for anyone who's pregnant, I've never been pregnant, just found the question in 'active threads'. But a lot of people I know put on a very high protection sunscreen in the morning and think it'll keep all day. It doesn't :( )

    Ah. Skin discoloration.
Yea....the belly line....I'm just waiting for that to happen....my mom had it....so I'm assuming I'll get it. I thought all pregnant women got it.
My face isn't discoloring any so far, in fact, it hasn't really gotten any sun....just my shoulders and whatnot. Not even my belly got a tan.
Chemical peels....yuck. I heard they hurt really bad. I will never put my face through that, my skin is sensitive enough without putting acid on there.
I had to buy sensitive skin sunscreen yesterday. The other stuff was making me tingly and turn a red color. Bleh. Plus, my belly butter is making the lower part of my belly tingle....like a chemical burn or something. Is there any stretch mark cream out there for sensitive skinned mamas?

Despite my olive skin, I never got that Lina Negra. I always had a line of fur there, but it didn't darken or get more hair when I was pregnant, any of the times. When I went into perimenopause, the line of fur there, along with a good amount of my pubic hair just went away. I showed my dh, and he hadn't even noticed. He said, "Are you sure?" Jeez, he spends more time down there than I do......:X

What complicated creatures we womyn are.

    Ahaha.
I have 'frog hair' (at least that's what my tattoo artist called it.). It hasn't gotten any darker. Thank goodness. It's still just really fine and blonde.
I have fair skin. My mom told me she heard that fair skinned people get those skin conditions easier than any other type of skin....is that true.

Haha. My tattoo artist said 'frog hair' is really, really light blonde, 'baby' hair. Like....extremely fine hair....y'know....like body hair.
