http://www.live8live.com/emailputin/ Email i recieved ------- Dear LIVE 8 army, Your voice is what the power of LIVE 8 is all about. Celebrity isn't what gets people like Bono and me into Downing Street or the White House - it's you. You are the muscle that opens the doors. Last year you pushed the G8 leaders to make big commitments, including debt cancellation for 300 million people and an extra $50 billion in aid for the world's poor. These steps are urgently needed to help end the extreme poverty in Africa that kills 30,000 a day. We know that this stuff works. It's already helping to put millions more children through school and providing the drugs to keep hundreds of thousands of people infected with HIV leading active, productive lives. In July, Russia's President Vladimir Putin is hosting the next G8 summit in St. Petersburg. We have to make sure that the G8 keep their promises and that real progress is made towards trade justice. If they do, 4 million lives a year could be saved by 2010. If they don't, many millions will die of preventable disease and hunger. Please copy and paste this in to the address bar http://www.live8live.com/emailputin/ now to send an email to President Putin to urge him to keep Africa on the G8 agenda. It's not rock n roll. It's poverty. It's not glamour or celebrity. It's death and disease. It's not Bob and Bono. It's you and it's them. It's us. Thank you. Bob Geldof and email this to president Putin Dear President Putin, I am writing to urge you to use your G8 from 15th-17th July 2006 to ensure that the Gleneagles leaders turn their promises into reality. Tens of millions of us voiced our concerns about the ongoing emergency in Africa, and the leaders heard us loud and clear. They have assured us that, along with other pledges, they will: Make AIDS drugs available to all of those who need them, guarantee care for all AIDS orphans, and train up enough doctors and nurses to provide the outstanding care necessary for all. Commit to free Primary education for all children, to be taught and nurtured by those with the best possible training, by 2015. We need sustained action and your leadership to drive forward practical plans to meet the pledges from last year. You can be the driving force that moves words into actions. If these promises are kept, 4.5 million lives can be saved every year by 2010. Bring the other G8 leaders on board – treat every patient, teach every child, and make promises happen. Thank you, Bob's the Best P.S. reply to this thread when you put your name in and hopefully it'll keep this thread active for a while
I am often accused of being naive, but i think you take it mate. the G8 are a capitalist insitution, and wont solve the problems of unregulated capitalism. People have been watching them for a long time, and they're not just gonna up sticks and solve all of the 3rd worlds problems. We need a complete overhaul of 'em all.
Wait wait wait... I just noticed that Putins email hasn't been supplied, so here it is. vladimir_putin_69@hotmail.com
wtf is up with every one u are all being complete dicks aren't you bothered at all by people in poverty, Sir Bob cares bout them and you don't, if u really feel like that you should be on these forums
I care, i just have a different outlook about how to help them than Lord Bob I just think that capitalism will not help them, its not that i dont think they should be heloed
I think that Bob and Bono and all the rest are trying to make a difference in the best way they can find, if they could get more media attention it would help a lot. The G8 have the power and resorces to make a huge difference to those suffering poverty and with enough pressure the G8 could be forced to stop being so greedy. Never underestimate the power of the masses, good luck to anyone who tries to harness that power though, I don't like your chances.
and climate and overpopulation and unfair trade and... debt, it's true. It's not just about a lack of food but other resourses as well.
I actually agree with the commi. Live 8 is a pretty bad institution. Firstly the US and Canada are the only nations which honor most of their promised donation. Most of the EU block nations have failed to deliver. But more importantly, these are mostly dumping practices. Food aid is good for situations like Darfur and Chad, but for cases in Africa where malnutrition is common, food dumping just deflates the prices of African crops making food much less valuble. That makes poverty more rampant. Many more people die in Africa because of malnutrition then hunger. Food dumping makes that much worse. There are other reasons G8 is bad then dumping. Primarily the fact that it just gives food aid and cash to African governments, which in many cases in the past have used the money to fund militias. Now their solution to this is not give money to governments which in the past had done this, completly ignoring tremendous African government shakeups in the 90's. You're pretty right. The main cause of pain in Africa is due to poverty. The main causes of intense poverty are war, corruption, disease, and unfair trade practices. G8 does nothing to address the isssues behind export subsidies which keeps Africa in poverty. I have a lot more to say about this, but I'll leave it for now.
And if a solution was found within capitalsim (although i would say its short term, but im not getting into another of those debates), it would be by helping set up strong economies and trade links with these countries, but instead, the rich companies etc give them the worst deal possible for their commodoties, and since they need the money that bad, theres nothing they can do.
Well it's important to get rid of the mindset that African nations are charity states that are helpless. That's somewhat insulting. Africa at one point exported 80% of the worlds gold. Africa certainly has the potential to be more then self sustaining. For the most part I'm neoliberal, however, theres certainly no justification for some industries which use Africa as a slave source for commodities. Especially De Beers, which is the most evil corporation since the Dutch East India company. They are more then happy to use African slaves controlled by warlords to mine their diamonds for them, and in Northern Africa, often use religious law to cut off hands of children they've stolen away at night. In southern Africa, they've used genocidal campaigns as justification for buying out more mines. De Beers business licenses should be suspended. There are several other (largely mining) corporations which utelize slavery in Africa which shouldn't be allowed to exist. Buying from slave states isn't 'free' trade, it's slavery.
im interested, what would your view be on trade barriers if they managed to begin to get their economies back on their feet as a temporary protection to the price of goods in their countries? Whats the Difference Between Bob Geldof and Jesus Jesus doesnt think he's Bob Geldof
The US donates money but fails to deliver on most of their other promises. The US also donates a poor amount for the wealth they enjoy.
