Our troops are spread thin as it is and Bush is finding even more jobs for them to do (border patrol). The Selective Service has already shown interest in having women register along with men. and the idea has been bouncing around washington since 9/11... (And the "political suicide" arguement doesnt sway me, congress can find multiple reasons to justify a draft and have their base believe that its for the best...) I wouldn't put any kind of date on that, but to say it will never happen because of politics seems about absurd. politics hasnt stopped us from invading 2 countries so far. politics hasnt stopped the stop loss... politics hasnt stopped the domestic and international spying on american citizens. politics hasnt stopped the executive branch from indefinitly detaining an american citizen deamed an "enemy combatant"... Why would it stop a draft?
A crisis occurs which requires more troops than the volunteer military can supply. Maybe such as a terror attack or two on american soil, while troops are already deployed in three countries (afganistan, iraq, and soon iran) and guarding the mexican-united states border... It's not that far fetched. Especially now that we're at the onset of the resource wars....
Which the CIA/Mossad brotherhood would be more than happy to provide. After all, they have a long and distinguished record on that score.
Even if some people on here don't believe that the government is involved in terror attacks (megara, pointbreak, cynical otter...), is it so inconcievable that another 9/11 or london subway bombing could happen in the near future? And what about the presidents plan to use the military if/when a human to human strain of H5N1 hits american cities.... Are we going to pull the troops needed for all of these current and future events out of thin air?
But the idea has not been bouncing around Washington. Some Democrats having been boucing around the idea to generate fear. The military is against it, the Bush administration is against it, the Republican party is against it. Yes the story still floats around, but some people have wised up.
I'd like to propose a question to Pointbreak: let's just assume you're right, that the Bush admin and the Republicans are really "against" a draft-ok, what if they change their minds, either suddenly or gradually? (I actually believe that's exactly what they plan to do). What then? Are you going to support it too? Just curious.
America is much more likely to lean on "allied" countries for more troops before instituting a draft.
But they wouldn't though, it's political suicide, and really, I think its safe to say most congressmen don't want the draft either, they have nothing to gain from it but their jobs to lose. The public too would never let it happen, a good deal of people can still remember the draft era, and those that can't, well the vast majority of those don't want to be drafted.
SInce we've lost "only" a few thousand troops in Iraq, over several years, it's hard for Americans to even imagine warfare on the scale we'll very likely see soon. We could have 2,000 killed every week, or even per day if we don't have enough forces to sustain the attacks. And it would likely continue for years on end. Assuming, of course, that DubyasW3 won't be as bad as WW2. If you don't think that King George is willing to throw bodies at distant nations like that, you've not been attentive. With casualty rates like that, there's no chance Congress would even hesitate to initiate a draft. They'd probably have an emergency session, and have it approved unanimously by both houses of Congress and in front of Bush in under 24 hours. Just for laughs, I recommend this short video clip... so what country SHOULD we pick a fight with next? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1598174198017667001&pl=true
No I would not support a draft. I can't imagine any scenario where it would be necessary. The idea of a sudden change of mind and a 24 hour emergency vote is ridiculous. The draft doesn't put people in uniforms in a week, it takes a long time to set it up and get people trained. The idea that we could invade Iran and then start a draft is completely nonsensical. These rumours are deliberately spread. Notice how Shane says the idea has been "bouncing around Washington"? Well, with whom has it been bouncing around? Any senior republicans? No. The Administration? No. The military? No. So where is exactly is this idea "bouncing around"? Who knows. The point it to be deliberatly vague, and keep the myth alive.
So Bush is LYING when he says he's eager to take us to war with Iran? And our military commanders are LYING when they point out that we'd need to induct another million or more troops overnight in order to do it? It doesn't matter whether or not Congress "wants" a draft. That willingness can be easily adjusted by subjecting the public to extremely high casualties, as we'll soon see. If a few thousand dead in NYC can bring about the fanaticism we've seen since, imagine that many killed EVERY DAY. Yeah, they'll vote for a draft. I hope I'm wrong, and I'm absolutely certain that I'm not, unless Dems overwhelmingly take control in Congress and keeps Bush too busy answering to criminal charges to start any new conquests. Not likely.
Exactly. I hope you're wrong too, but unfortunately, I don't think you are. God help us all if you aren't.
Even if Iran surrenders today, we still will not even discuss any possibility of not attacking Iran and burning it to the ground, says Condi. It's a done deal. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said today the United States is not offering security guarantees to Iran in a bid to end the dispute over its nuclear program. "Security assurances are not on the table," Ms Rice told the Fox News Sunday television program. SOURCE: http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,19215430%5E1702,00.html
