I'm going to agree. When you get 400,000 people to sing along...you kinda win.

Fallujah- David Rovics www.davidrovics.com (hear it free) also see the Draft is Coming, and Song for Chavez, all songs are on For the Moment

personally, a protest song must be about a current issue. Joe McDonald has updated the Rag.

Gimme an F! Gimme an I! Gimme an S! Gimme an H! What's that spell? What's that spell? What's that spell?

Yeah, come on all of you big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam,
    Way down yonder in Vietnam.
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

    And it's one, two, three,
    What are we fighting for?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
    Next stop is Vietnam;
    And it's five, six, seven,
    Open up the pearly gates,
Ah, there ain't no time to wonder why,
    Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

    Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Gotta go out and get those reds
The only good commie is the one that's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we're blowin' em all to kingdom come.

    And it's one, two, three,
    What are we fighting for?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
    Next stop is Vietnam.
    And it's five, six, seven,
    Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
    Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

    <instrumental break>

Well, come on Wall Street, don't be slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of the trade,
But just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

    And it's one, two, three,
    What are we fighting for?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
    Next stop is Vietnam.
    And it's five, six, seven,
    Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
    Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
    Come on pops, don't hesitate.
Send em off before it's too late.
Be the first one on your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

    And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
    Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
    Next stop is Vietnam.
    And it's five, six, seven,
    Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
    Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

This is the one that made me think and become anti-war

Look at your young men fighting
    Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they've always done before

Look at the hate we're breeding
Look at the fear we're feeding
Look at the lives we're leading
The way we've always done before

    My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can't deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars

    D'you wear a black armband
    When they shot the man
Who said "Peace could last forever"
    And in my first memories
    They shot Kennedy
I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all
    That you can't trust freedom
When it's not in your hands
    When everybody's fightin'
    For their promised land
    And

I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
    Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
    In a human grocery store
    Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
Ow, oh no, no, no, no, no

Look at the shoes you're filling
Look at the blood we're spilling
Look at the world we're killing
The way we've always done before
Look in the doubt we've wallowed
Look at the leaders we've followed
Look at the lies we've swallowed
And I don't want to hear no more

    My hands are tied
For all I've seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
'Cause all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars

"WE PRACTICE SELECTIVE ANNIHILATION OF MAYORS AND
GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FOR EXAMPLE TO CREATE A VACUUM
THEN WE FILL THAT VACUUM AS POPULAR WAR ADVANTAGE
    PEACE IS CLOSER" **

I don't need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
    Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
    In a human grocery store
    Ain't that fresh
And I don't need your civil war
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
I don't need your civil war
I don't need your civil war
    Your power hungry sellin' soldiers
    In a human grocery store
    Ain't that fresh
I don't need your civil war
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no uh-oh-uh, no uh-oh, uh no
I don't need one more war

I don't need one more war
No, no, no, no uh-oh-uh, no uh-oh, uh no
WHAZ SO CIVIL 'BOUT WAR ANYWAY?
    (whistle)

Man, if considered a protest song the greatest has to be Children of the grave by Black Sabbath. :)
I get goosebumps right now as i'm listening to it again:

    Children of the Grave

    Revolution in their minds
    The children start to march
Against the world in which they have to live
And all the hate that's in their hearts
They're tired of being pushed around
And told just what to do
They'll fight the world until they've won
    And love comes flowing through.

Children of tomorrow live in the tears that fall today
Will the sunrise of tomorrow bringing peace in any way
Must the world live in the shadow of atomic fear
Can they win the fight for peace or will they disappear?

So you children of the world, listen to what I say
If you want a better place to live in spread the word today
Show the world that love is still alive you must be brave
Or you children of today are children of the grave.

Dylan-Masters of War is my current fave and especially the Pearl Jam cover of that on the Dyaln 30th anniversary disc.

However other faves include Bob Marley-War, Roy Brown- Monon, Marvin Gaye's- What's Goin' On and Santana's Migra.
