I'm a 26 yr old male Canadian and I'll be visiting the dam from May 27-31. I've read on this site about the good stuff to buy at different places. I'm wondering which coffeeshops are good to meet other people, tourists and/or locals.....

Also, any club recommendations to meet some nice feminitas? Doesn't really matter what kind of music, just a nice social atmosphere.

Also, is there anything cool going on these 5 days I'll be there that you know of or anyone want to meet up and burn a few, let me know?

BrLvr - Where you from in Canada? I'm originally from Hamilton (outside of Toronto) but living in Dubai (UAE, Middle East) right now. Sliding up to the 'Dam in early June... Soooo looking forward to a week of sin & debauchery.

As for good shops... A chap named Nemesis on this site has created a great Flash map. Look for one of his posts, click the map in his sig, and off you go. Quite honestly, though, you can/should just wander around and stop by some shops. Folks are friendly everywhere, each shop has its own unique charms, and it really depends on what you like. The Bulldog shops are a little more 'touristy' (but I like a few of them)... check out Double Reggae, The Doors, La Cana, Grey Area, or just bake up and wander. Best way to see the 'Dam.

Where are you staying? Most hostels will have decent maps with some shops listed. You can always ask around, too.

    Enjoy the trip...

Yeh, you mentioned the Bulldogs and I agree that there are better places to go and far superior places to get your weed, however there is one Bulldog that I don't mind visiting (No 90 Oudezijds Voorburgwal), I just wouldn't actually buy my weed there. The window seat in the summer when they open the large windows overlooking the canal is OK for a quick smoke and it's very tourist orientated with quick turn around.

Even though I'm English the Grasshopper I avoid completely because it's usually filled with British Chavs, lol.
UrbanHippie is absolutely correct about just wandering around and finding places that you personally like. Each to their own but one I like is Hill Street Blues, has beer, pool table, den at the back with views, mixed tourists and top trance tunes. Shared several joints myself with a Canadian guy once while propping up the bar in a pissed stupor, lol.

I find wandering aimlessly on bike or foot is all part of the fun but to have some idea where to go head to De Kuil coffeeshop. On the dealers counter you will find a free printed coffeeshop map with the word CAUTION written over it. Pick one up and you'll see all the top coffeeshops placed on it but none of the smaller ones.
    enjoy

Thanks for the great map and advise.

I'm from New Brunswick Canada btw.

I've read on this board how many brits and amercians are perceived by the locals and tourists alike. Just wondering how Canadians perceived?

A NB lad! Nice... Spent some time out in Gagetown.

The locals love Canadians (historically, going back to the war - that's why they ship hundreds of thousands of tulips to Canada for the Tulip fest ever year - in thanks for stepping up and helping them out. Now, if they REALLY wanted to thank us, they'd send over a couple coffee shops and a few red-light windows. But I digress...) What the locals don't like - and this goes for anywhere in the world - are boisterous tourists. Whether you're from the US, UK, Canada, anywhere, take your cues from people around you. Don't get stupid-trashed and run around singing 'Sweet Caroline' at the top of your lungs. Don't go off on a half-hour diatribe as to why the Bush/Blair combo is the best thing to happen to this world since tabaccy & beer... Be respectful, courteous, and friendly (you're Canadian; it's in your genes) and you're golden. My rule is 'fly under the radar' - don't do anything to stand out, be too effusive, draw attention, or detract from the general atmosphere. Just have a good time, and you'll get along fine...

    Again, enjoy the trip...

No worries here, me and my friend are pretty mellow folk but like to socialize and share stories. I don't talk about politics and we're not the type to cause any uproars. I'm just looking forward to taking it all in and enjoying all the surrounding and everything that the Dam has to offer. T - 11 days!!! So many places to go, so little time.
