Can someone give a rough timeline for the dread process?

I know everyone's hair is different, so it's hard to say. But, from your experience could you give us a sorta (1 month, 2 months, 3 months, etc.) timeline of how your dreads have formed. I am at the 2nd month mark now and it seems like mine are going through puberty, heh. Is this normal to what you have experienced? BTW, I backcombed mine to start. For those who would like to give us a timeline, could you please state the method, or lack therof used to start your dreads.

the people I know in real life say it takes about a year or a year and a half before they look the way they want them to.

four months, and my daughter's very fine red hair is just now finally starting to dread up, but there's still lots of loose hairs everywhere.

I've had mine for 2 years and about 4 months now and I started them by backcombing. To start, I had really long straight hair down to my ass. After backcombing, they were a few inches past my shoulders. I'd say about 3-4 months later, and they had shrunk to way above my shoulders and they were thin and messy with a ton of loose hair. I didn't really notice too much progress for a while because my hair grows slowly to begin with, and then combine that with the knotting progress. I guess about a year after first backcombing, my hair had started to knot up really well and my dreads got pretty tight and hard. The length was still pretty short, barely brushing my shoulders. Now, 2 years and some later, my dreads are a good deal past my shoulders (except for the front ones which are a bit shorter) and they're pretty tight. You can check my gallery for a few pics if you care to. Don't know if that helped at all, but there ya go...lol.

I made mine in sometime around august/september, I used the "palmroll-and-splitt-method". My hair was pretty short to begin with, and it has grown along the way, so it's hard to tell how much it has shrinked, but I think it was during christmas they shrinked and got all locked up. Before that they were lots of loose hair, and I had to keep twisting and palmrolling, so they wouldn't go out. But after chritmas and the next months they just did their own thing and now they are 9 months old, and I am really pleased with them:)

i've had mine for three years and when i first had 'em backcombed by my gf, they looked like total crap for the first...4 or 5 months. my hair was at my shoulders, and when she was done they were about two or three inches shorter. then after that first half yearish time, they started to look okay as long as they were pulled back, and at about 8 months...they looked kinda how i wanted them too, only a bit short. then they just grew and grew and grew and that's what i'm doing now...growin' em, cause i'd like really long locks. but i still have tons of loose hairs and flyaways, and they certainly arn't "perfect" looking, but that's how i like 'em so it suits me just fine.
