    Hey
Just wondering, has anyone been to the Earthaven ecovillage in Asheville NC and if so... what was it like? It looks like a real nice place from its website but its the type of place where you have to buy your own lot or something and you can build there. But anyways. My point is... Asheville isnt but a couple of hours west of me I think ... and I was readin how earthaven has some work exchange programs.... individual people already living there can request outside assistance, and in return they may provide lodging or a tent site, food, etc. Just wondering if anyone has been there or better yet, did the work exchange program....

I've been a work exchanger at Village Terraces, a neighborhood in the Earthaven Ecovillage since January 2006. IMHO...This is a wonderful way to find out if living this lifestyle will work for you...

dang, theres even a yahoo grou about it? how cool.

Asheville seems to be a real happenin hippy'ish place from what I keep hearing. Just Saturday I was working .. and had sat down to lunch and overheard (eavesdropping, heh) a group of people talking about their experience of dining at a place in Asheville .... a vegetarian restaurant they went to that they said was excellent, and how the people around there looked like they were from a different culture ..... anyways I thought it was interesting ... :)

Asheville rocks! My wife is from northeast Tennessee, and whenever we're down visiting family we make a point to go to Asheville. There are some amazing breweries/brewpubs and fun festivals. If we ever move down that way, it'll be to Asheville or a suburb for sure.

The only thing I didn't like when I looked at the Earthhaven website is the fact that they seem to put such an emphasis on "rules"...I was immediately turned off when they made it such a HUGE point to say "NO PETS"! I don't go anywhere without my loyal Loki, dig? Society has enough rules/laws already, so why move to a community where not only do the standard Federal & State laws apply, but also MORE restrictions as set out by the community itself? Just a thought...

lol ... well the job exchange thing varies ....... Ive seen some listed on there before that do offer food ... I personally wouldnt go for anything that didnt offer food! lol :)

The pay thing isnt a big deal I guess... alot of communes dont offer pay either. But food and a place to stay is enough to do work for ... so it might be a place to check out if someone is looking to do this sort of thing...

oh, I didnt see that .... that sucks. Yeah I dont understand some of these places... I guess I kind of understand it with the work exchange thing because you'd be living at someone else's place, for determined periods of time..... but on the other hand, Ive seen communes seeking members, and specifically state NO PETS as one of the top rules and go into alot of depth about how they dislike the owning of pets .......... seems to be some sort of odd belief, more than anything else. dunno...

    ................

I have a cat. I LOVE my cat. If I were to just go someplace for awhile I would leave him behind.... but if I were thinking about actually JOINING into say, a commune, well then they better accept pets ... cuz he is a hell of alot more important to me than most humans are. .... and has been a significant part of the last 10 yrs of my life. I pity people who miss out on the benefits of owning a pet ..such as proven lowering of blood pressure/stress ... and the companionship and unwavering love they give. Pets are fun, and awesome little critters .. :)
