I don't think it CAN be defined. It is a VERY abstract term. Unlike the terms prep and punk, hippie is more of a lifestyle. Differant people may delve into any part of the term, and be called a hippie or not. Basically, the foundation is love and peace. Say someone is an avid pot-smoker/acid dropper. To a lot of people this person may appear to be a hippie, but they may beleive in war and such. To a republican/right winger, a hippie is anyone who isn't a conservative. To some it is anyone with longer hair, or of poorer hygein than themselves. To another it is defined by clothes. To a lot of people, it is a persons ideology, and to another their musical taste. Someone's religion or faith may also cause that person to be labeled a "hippie", as may their interests and hobbies. Basically, there is no set deffinition to being a hippie. There are some people I have met who dressed nothing like a hippie, but seemed to be one deep down. I have also met people who dressed like a hippie, but their ideas and politics were far from it.
I must add some positive vibes to this thread .... much love and light to all of you beautiful people ....
That's the thing, the term hippie is actually a very derogatory one. I really don't consider myself a 'hippie' to the smallest extent of the term. The Non-Hippie Side: I'm a meat eater I have a bank account and an ATM card I own an iPod I love Burger King and Taco Bell The Hippie-Stereotype Side: I have long hair and a beard I love the Grateful Dead (but I don't collect bootleg tapes) I think that religious people are stupid puppets I'm a liberal, I hate republicans (only if they're assholes. I know some republicans who are cool people) That's the thing though, everybody expects hippies to fall under certain stereotypes. I'm just a person who likes to follow my own rules, and I think that is what a hippie should be. Not the vegan, tie-dye wearing, bearded, smelly, non-bathing, Grateful Dead/Phish tape collecter.
The ideal.. *sigh* People with unusual talents, most of the ones I grew up around specialized in certain things, mostly self taught...Whether it be plants, herbs, carving, fishing, crafts...What have you, many were bookish, & partied too... Some laid back, some political..Nature loving, kind..Treat others the way they want to be treated. Humanitarian..humble..Survivalists..Community oriented individuals... ...Notice I started out with ideal.
That's really where the definition lies, Someone who follows their ideals, if their ideals go against the status quo.
