You see? Its a word.OK - I'm from Birmingham UK.These days thats like 40% white - everyone else indian or african. I was 14 - we had a rock band.We had an asian drummer - Rakesh - good drummer. Now at that age - we were rockers - we wanted a drummer - Rakesh was a good drummer - so we hired him. My cousin would call out to him - '****** in the woodpile - on the beat of 4' - we would all laugh - he didn't care - he knew we were uninhibeted - and thats the orgasm - cos he knew we just saw him as Rakesh - and he was a good drummer and a good companion - BUT he'd had people attck him who didn't like him cos of his colour. We all played well,he played drums well,I was average on keyboards - my cousin was never afraid of saying anything.Rakesh would say ' I'll split your white veins open and piss in your blood stream '.We were hard teenagers - we would answer back and carry on.We were best of friends - we had a sadistic sense of humour but it carried us through as a band.We were 'united through music' - the racist comments we made to each other - were only taking the piss out of a society ignorant to the new humour - the fact we could stand opposite each other and make stereotypical remarks and know we were all just joking. This was 1988 - thats 18 years ago - UK - not a joke.I've noticed a lot of sensitivity around the word '****** and paki' - yet 18 years ago - we had a relationship with other cultures that was comfortable. In Birmingham - on my last visit - 3 moths ago - as a white boy in a black community - there was no danger. If you are a fat schoolboy - everyone will call you fat.If everyone is fat - you'll get off lightly. If everyone is black and your'e white then - you gotta put your faith in humanity. But of course - I'm ignorant - I live in UK.If I was a farmer in Johannesburg then wtf would I know. The UK does alot of things wrong - but one thing we did right was - we integrated alot of other cultures equally. The language/culture could go to hell by now.Terrorists go to hell. You have no idea how long integration of different cultures in this country has been going on.Old religions are just.....unfashionble.You gott keep up with fashion... Some people just can't resist. They really like to say that word and want an excuse to use it without being called racist. So, they use it in "non-threatening" ways. ha ha... What is it with this word? Why does it attract so many people?
Ok - so is uk stuck in the dark ages? I don't like prejudice.Infact i can't stand it.And yet - I'm starting to feel like I wanna send all Polish people back to Poland after tonight. It's like - YEAH Britain - good oppurtunity for East Europe - but sadly destroying the community we had by splitting it up into large communities of people who don't speak English - Sorrry - but I was born here I have a right to speak my own language and not feel like I should make exceptions for presnent company - but I do anyway - yak shimash I was saying all tonight - to various Polish people - Jin Dobre - spelling not correct - good day - wanna cigarette - but it's useless - they just group together and treat us like trash - I can't do it anymore - I'm not racist - but if people don't try - I can do nothing but get angry. And I am getting increasingly angry. It's not the language - it's the lack of effort to be friendly that is really fucking pissing me off bigtime
This is not a thread about the word '******' its about people from other countries living in your country - how much harmony and conflict is there? I firmly believe we should be able to live together - but one to one is totally different to large dominating communities - Britain has changed since I was born here.I feel good - cos at school - we had indian, asians, africans at school - who were born here - '2nd generation' you might say - some were very popular - nobody cared - at that age (teenage years) everyones struggling to be somebody. Now - at the age of 33 - I'm finding it hard to deal with people who are the same age as me or younger - who are literally just here - for THE MONEY.fuckers.go on ban me - but you'll see - it's not a racist point - its a point about of morality. The most famous phrase in Britain is - 'Civilty costs you NOTHING' - and these bandwagoners are not giving anything like it - simple things like 'hello' - 'good morning' 'thank you' - the basics
Come on - argue I'm wrong - argue I'm right. If not - I'll just assume you all live in perfect harmony........ahhhhhhhh..............if only
If somebody doesn't respond soon - this will be a landmark post - I'll become evil rgpaddler - and I'll put a nasty GIF in my signature.I've had enough of being nice - everyone just walks over me
ok.. i kinda see your point. and i would like for the 'n' word to not have to mean something racist...but especially living in one of the most racist states of the U.S. (south carolina)...you can't really just say that word and not expect to get ur ass beat...unless...like u said in ur case ur with some good friends. im engaged to a black man, and so you would think i could say this word because we are so close...i refuse to use the word because of its origin comes from the word "ignorant" and my man is anything but ignorant. plus, the word is used as an insult..and yes maybe if people used it more as a common word it wouldnt have an insulting meaning...but its hard to change the meaning of a word like that. i stay away from the word because its nasty. i know the point of this thread was not to talk about the word...but i wouldn't just throw it out like its nothing like that. maybe in the UK its fine too, but this is a forum that americans can see as well.
You make an interesting point. Is it true however that blacks use the word towards each other in a friendly way?.In fact don't some rap groups use it in their lyrics - ok - I'm from uk - I don't know what the word represents to you folks.Thats why I'm asking. In Birmingham where I'm from (ozzy osbournes hometown) there is gun crime - but only between black gangs.Generally whites only get caught up in cross-fire.It's rare though cos well as you might know - guns, knives are illegal here. The Asian community is far more dominant there and have largely been more accepted simply cos they run alot of supermarkets and are very hard working. It is harder,I think for the african population to get jobs
Well, I live in L.A. and we never use that word around here. I can't even bring myself to say it. Yes, blacks use it with each other but that's different, isn't it? To me it's a horrible word. Folks here are pretty uptight about that word but L.A. is pretty liberal.
Well - this is the point I was trying to get at - we grew up so closely at school that every insult was 'de-sensitised' - we were very friendly - now I'm older - and have moved away from that place - I would never dream of using the word.Just seems a shame that kids can make light of serious insults that adults invented - but adults turn it into war
Friendly banter amongst friends is one thing. My friend TJ for example: He's a hefty black man. Resembles Ice Cube, the rapper. I'll look at him all the time and say something like, "Look here ******, I don't appreciate you acting all niggerish in my white neighborhood. Imma have to ask you to check your niggerdom at the entrance", and we'll have a laugh about it. Would I say that to everybody? Not at all. Hell, there's probably only one or two other people I'd say that to, really. Point is, regardless of race, it's all about context and the audience. As with anything else said jokingly, know your audience. However, obviously, with the wrong context any audience is going to be offended. As many times as I've said the word "******" to TJ, I'd never in my life get mad and say to him, "You stupid fuckin' ******." The world hasn't progressed or regressed much in the way of what, I think, your intended point was rg. It's all just about context and audiences.
blacks use it...but in a different form. they dont generally call each other in the form everyone here has said it. instead of "er" they say it with an "a" at the end of the word so that it is their own form of saying it. my boyfriend does not say it unless he is joking around with his black friends who may have said it to him first...but he doesnt like to because again as i've said its simply ignorance. but they don't say it with "er" at the end unless they are talkin bout white people using it. it is a shame that kids can make light use of it...but the thing is that when you get older and learn more about the history of the word I don't think you would want to use the word because it's so ugly. the black community use it in a variation but they still dont use the original form as you all have used it. i just stay away from the word. people here in south carolina use it in a very ugly way.
i'm also from Birmingham, and I really do not understand what you are getting at. are you pissed of that people are no longer casually racist in a humourous way to wach other? i have always lived in a community where white people were the minority amongst my age, i see no issue at all. the only problem i have seen is a rise of racism amognst all races, and the old spirit of a multicultural city are dissapearing, because different races are segregating. i see no need to ever say or use a racist term no matter if it was in a casual humourous situation, it may be more PC or whatever, but i only want to spread love amognst friends and my community not hate or offense no matter if it isn't used in that way peacex
I think more people listen to what's going on just outside their "interferance zone".. Once upon a time, here in the U.K. people really did realise it was people talking amongst themselves.. Usually lighthearted insults that often broke down certain barriers amongst friends.. But things have changed, and people here to seem to look for things to be shocked about. I too grew up pleasantly innocent to the adult meanings of casual "only insulting to other people" names. Some of the things I said would be considered harsh now, but now I'm an adult, those adult meanings are mine to consider before using anymore as well.. I often wonder if the fact that the U.K. has never had a Martin Luther King has made race relations better or worse here.. I'd gladly enter into THAT discussion!
