Hey sis I alsways find myself "stuck" oh so joyously joyously "stuck" on the gulf islands. Plus the small islands are hitchable for anyone, there's no buses there so everyone does it. I hitch Vancouver Island by myself, it's a bit doggeyer and I wouldn't recommend to every gal but I do well. Horby island is pretty special you can camp the woods and the locals don't mind, there's a free store and a some very warm beaches Big Trib and Little Trib (great nude beach and a place to meet cool locals and travellers). Have fun in Nelson! I hope for you to find many joyous adventures and friends, pretty hard not to!

Yeah Nelson is ok, if you're leavin for there this summer be sure to stop in Penticton and Summerland too if you can. Some great sites there. Just left Vancouver before xmas, Kitsilano was nice and so is the Island of course. Feel free to PM me if you want.
    Be Well.

So a hotel in Vancouver costs less than a camp site?
I guess if you want to stay around East Hastings and Main. :&

Yeah. We used to pick on the Queen Charlotte Islands when I used to do that kind of thing. Its far from their season right now though.

But seriously I'd rather sleep outside on Wreck Beach (if your camping on the sand you have to be up before the parkies get down in the morning and it's cool, otherwise there's plenty of foliage up the hill) than in one a those hotels. There is a nice hostel right across from the main street train station. It's called Ivy House I stay there when I have cash, I think a dorm is around 18 bucks.

"Horby island is pretty special you can camp the woods and the locals don't mind"

It's Hornby, not Horby, you cannot camp in the woods, the locals DO mind, it's illegal and it destroys the very fragile forest on this little island that has a lack of fresh water and is over run by well meaning " hippies " who destroy the very beauty they love by ignorance and stupidity.
Please visit the islands but do it with a little knowledge and respect. O.K. ?

Hitch hiking is fine, but you may want to know that buses do run up and down Island, they are cheap and run often.

I don't mean to sound harsh, it's just that a little research and knowledge may be helpful for you.

sorry people were pretty nice a few years ago and I never ate or shit irresponsibly on hornby. Sorry I'm not in a spelling bee I was just giving a few tips Hornby it is. some locals are nicer than other...hippies...whatever....mincing words they just shot a perfectly nice cougar a month or so back. we're all on stolen land anyways. The island bus service sucks everyone knows that, even the drivers

    fuc

besides now it's after may long weekend and everything here smells like cars.

    Hey all,

First off, wanna say that I love BC. What a great place to be. :)

Secondly, well, I'm not actually in BC, at the moment. I'm back in AB (just outside of Calgary) visiting family and friends for a bit in the summer. However, now a couple friends from back home have expressed interest in going to back with me to Victoria. But we wanted to take a road trip through, and stop at some places along the way. Staying at this town and that for however long, workin a couple temp jobs along the way perhaps, and movin' on. We already plan to go to Nelson and Kelowna, etc., but I was wondering if anyone can recommend some other cool and friendly places to stop?

    That'd be great, Ta.

The bus service does suck, but there is one.
If you camped in the woods you contributed to fucking up the island.
Natives didn't live on Hornby historicaly because it has very little water, the Scots stole from the Brits the Brits stole from the Scots the tribes from North Africa stole from the south, the Haida stole from the Gitksan the Blackfoot from the Cree, the Norweigan from the Danish, the Danish from the Brits.

But instead of getting in a snit about history learn to take care of the land that we DO live on.

    stop

I think camping is different than building and living on an island permamnently. And I reckon the indians did visit, there sure are a lot of old trails there...no the island was cool with me there, it provided the first safe home I had to live on in years and I loved it in return. thanks for assuming nothing. There is running water in the winter and there used to be more before the island got a pretty total haircut beginning o' last century yep... recently wells have been drying with the hot summers. Really shouldn't assume nothing so I fertilized the island a little. Wah! I step pretty careful and actually find I use less energy when travelling, that's MY thing though. It's true though things are crowded here. They are everywhere and it has to do with a lot more than a basic instinct to move about in the summer. Besides how dare you judge my individual life? There is a difference between large socialogical judgements and judging an individuals life choices. You can't.

ps thanks for the history lesson sure you got it right you were there right? just like you know I fucked hornby?
