What was the essence of the real hippies ? It was love. Some tried love for 6 months or so; the world didn't change overnight, so they went on to selfishness, hedonism. The real ones (very few) stayed with love. Love is the only reality that makes life bearable; but love is hard , it's painful. Love isn't a fun party. It is the only source of joy in life. It takes courage. It isn't for wimps or the self-centered. Many don't value love; some actually hate love (evil is a reality).
Choose love, seek love, know love, love love; we have nothing to lose.

in life, there is fear and love. from love come all positive emotions, from fear come all negative. fear is love that is too overwhelming to accept, or face. fear is an illusion that exists solely to be in direct contrast with love, so we have some basis for comparison, but it's not real. if you're not scared of anything, you'll love everything.

    Oldhippieman,

We do need justice; we do need to acknowledge and respect the basic human rights of every person; we also need to accept responsibility for our own behaviour and hold others accountable for theirs. Prisons are a necessity
because some people don't respect others; they hurt them.
If we learn to love, we will treat the people in our lives and every person we encounter each day better,. We will be able to deal with those who want to be assholes better. This builds justice.

Love is a verb; too few - those with impatience or looking for quick results - did not realize that back then. It was ideology then, and glad for it, but those who stuck to it were few, & they usally were the ones that realized love is a verb, an action word, requiring time, DEEP sincerity, endeavor, patience. It can still be achieved!

I think of love as a cool breeze on a hot day. Even when the breeze isn't there I can feel it, because I remember..........

*SiRiUs*Bright_Star - What you wrote, excellent. Not limited to any one type either. Mostly we have tendency to think of it as male female, but also must include love of family, which I think rebellion in some still blocks that, and love to friends, love to animals, nature, etc.

Love may start out easy, to maintain it is something else. Almost it always requires some form of endeavor, allowance of time, dedication, etc. I dont know where commitment phobics fit into all this, but there can never be felt the deepest of deep love when devoid of commitment.

Also like what wandering_okie, very sweet. As long as that love is of course a verb. [IMG]

Carry On (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)

One morning I woke up and I knew that you were gone.

A new day, a new way, I knew I should see it along.

Go your way, I'll go mine and carry on.

The sky is clearing and the night has gone out.

The sun, he come, the world is all full of light.

Rejoice, rejoice, we have no choice but to carry on.

The fortunes of fables are able to sing the song.

Now witness the quickness with which we get along.

To sing the blues you've got to live the tunes and carry on.

Carry on, love is coming, love is coming to us all.

Where are you going now my love? Where will you be tomorrow?

Will you bring me happiness? Will you bring me sorrow?

Oh, the questions of a thousand dreams, what you do and what you
    see,

Lover, can you talk to me?

Girl, when I was on my own, chasing you down,

What was it made you run, trying your best just to get
    around?

The questions of a thousand dreams, what you do and what you
    see,

Lover, can you talk to me?

    EVERYBODY I LOVE YOU
by Neil Young and Stephen Stills

    Know you got to run
    Know you got to hide
Still there is a great life
    Engrained deep within your eyes
    Open up, open up
    Baby let me in
You expect for me to love you
When you hate yourself my friend la la la ...

    Everybody I love you
    Everybody I do
    (oh yes)
Though your heart is an answer
I need your love to get me through
(oh yea, I really do now)
When I tell you I love you
    (when I tell you)
You can believe that it's true
    (oh yes it is)

    Everybody I love you
    Everybody I do
(oh, yes I really do now...)

It's the time of the season
    When the love runs high
In this time, give it to me easy
    And let me try
    With pleasured hands

To take you and the sun to
    Promised lands
    To show you every one
It's the time of the season for loving

    What's your name?
    (What's your name?)
    Who's your daddy?
    (Who's your daddy? He rich?)
    Is he rich like me?

    Has he taken
    (Has he taken)
    Any time
    (Any time to show)
To show you what you need to live?
    Tell it to me slowly
    Tell you what?
    I really want to know
It's the time of the season for loving

What is Love ? That's the question we have to answer. If we seek love, seek to know love, our understanding of love gets clearer and clearer. Our illusions and misunderstandings about love fall away. We seek love within ourselves , in others, in nature. We seek it in all aspects of reality. At some point we realize we all untuitively know love. We realize all young children value love, all young children are drawn to love, respond to love. As we age this sense is muted , sometimes lost. Why ? We come to see there is hatred of love in us because we are selfish. Selfishness and love can't co-exist. This struggle between love and selfishness in us
is lifelong. In some , the choice is for selfishness and a turning away from love. Some get to the point of hating love. Dealing with these people is part of the suffering of love. This suffering is unavoidable in this world. Others will love us more than we love them. There is a certain guilt feeling in that. There are those who return our love and that is joy.
    Perfect Joy is perfect love:
Lover loving Beloved loving Lover loving Beloved...

    playing with the love:
the love is the broken motion yet always new of the look of the earth, the love is the silence of the shining din of the void, the love is the shiny destiny of the day or the shining wind of the night, the love is earth it is the moment. a prodigious dike over the death!
EVERYTHING THIS IS HIPPY! THE LOVE.

Steve...I love Montana. My favorite state. What an impressive statement on love you have so bravely thrown out into cyberspace here. You may never read this message but I am going to say it anyway. A long time ago there were many people who tried very hard to inspire the world to an unselfish, non materialistic, playful, artistic, emotional, spiritual and intellectual way of being in the world. Oh well. Just a few still remain among this very ego oriented, self centered, arrogant, me, me, me present day state of affairs. I know exactly how you feel. There is no real love out there anymore in my opinion. If there is I cant find it. I think the only source of pure love these days is in very young children. I look at them and can relive some of the wonderful experiences I had back in the 70's hanging out with great people who had no agendas, no cell phones, no computers, just a simple way of life. Whether it was a bonfire potluck supper, or jamming with local musicians, or just a walk by the river under a summer moon, life was easy then, life was happy then. Now I live in the days of gourmet lattes, people plugged in to a million devices, and disconnected with each other.

i think love in this sense is a kind of code word. but what it's a code word for is absolutely right on and correct and neccessary and important and what counts and all of that.

you know my one caveat, the one thing about it, and i don't mean to diminish anything or its goodness or power, but if people think their intentions are good enough and don't take into account the consiquences of their priorities ...

well of course if they really love the'll do all of those things too.
i guess i'm just not trusting enough to immagine because everyone goes along with saying all you need is love, if it even happens someday that they do,
that these things will automaticly happen

    and that's what needs to

the idea of love, of not having to disect the mechanism of it,
that is really appealing to me,
but i also know there really is a mechanism
and its about how all of us live
of each of us adds togather with each other
to create what we are surrounded by that is beyond each of us alone
