maybe the "best" is purely subjective, but technically speaking, jimmy wasn't even close to people like vai, satch, malmsteen, becker, batio, lynch, macalpine, petrucci, etc. even srv was miles ahead. eric clapton was around before jimi, so was jeff beck i believe.
actually you know what?! i don't like guitar virtuosos, boring technical wankers. I LOVE jimi and hes different bands........... not because of his guitar.......... haha you havent undersatood anything about him, nada!!!!!!
Virtuosos can suck a cock, Jimi Hendrix was better than Steve Vai or any similar wanker/cocksucker. Jimi's music was beautiful, guitarists who simply play really fast up several differnt scales arent really that good!
steve vai??? he is way too pretentious. and he has no soul whatsoever. different strokes for different folks, I always say. if you like guitar virtuosos, then steve vai is a good pick, but even at that, I would say frank zappa was a much better guitar player than vai. still, I would pick anyone over vai, such as stevie ray vaughn, or hendrix.
Whatever anyone before him ever did, Jimi sought to take it further. He was a true guitar god. I love my Fender Strat because of him, although there are many other fabulous guitar players out there. But Slash?????????????????uh.....no. He's good but not better than the greatest guitarists of the 20th century.
Link Wray invented guitar distortion by poking holes into his amplifier's speaker. To say that one guitarist is the best of them all is just ludicrous. With as many different styles of music and guitar playing, it all comes down to a matter of taste, really. Jimi was definitely an innovator, though. He did use alot of techniques that hadn't been used before. Alot of times he was just too sloppy for me though. He wasn't the first virtuoso around either...that's just stupid. No one even knows the definite origins of the guitar, so how would we know who was the first virtuoso?
Did anyone else notice that the guy who started this thread spelled Jimi's name three different ways?
these virtuoso guitarists... umm lets see... people have been playing 'classical' music for a long time and most of these virtuoso's you can hear that in their playing... i know plenty of people that CAN play the same as that... jimi on the other hand did things no one else was doing. and as far as i know not many people can improvise with the same finesse as he can...just a thought
I have to say that jimi is like, the best. he did stuff that was so different, and he sang aswell. I have alot of respect for people that can play guitar well, and sing at the same time. he's not just a guitarist, but a musician. y'know, i don't think it's fair to compare hendrix with other guitarists. he's totally in his own league. ok so all this is coming from a 15 year old girl who's only been listening to hendrix for a month or so since i stole my dad's the ultimate experience CD. but i'm listening to it like people back in his day would've. if that makes sense.
alot of people can. sorry but i have to say it, trey anastasio would dance circles around hendrix all night long as far as improvisation goes.
He is the best guitar player ever, if you want proof listen to his performance at woodstock when he's playing the star spangled banner switching into purple haze. The solo to purple haze with the greatest solo I've ever heard in my life. Then it switches into this really trippy instrumental. Its unbelievable. You should also listen to his blues album and Electric Ladyland.
You should listen to more music. You can't give proof to back up who is the greatest guitarist ever, as it is pure opinion. You'd be stupid to argue back and forth with this...he's the best guitarist ever, nuh uh! he is so! no he's not! blah blah blah.
