Hey all, i really need your help, my dreads are kinda fallin appart, i only got them 3 days ago and they are now not lookin anything like proper dreads! (my hair is really straight n blounde) When i backcombed it they looked alright the first day, but now they r just matted hair, is their anything i can do? Is this normal? (i know u can not expect perfect dreads within a week) Most of my friends who have dreads just started rubbing their hair, and applied wax, and i would never use wax from wat ive heard and because im a vegan. Is their anything i can do to fix them, i really wanted dreads and i dont know wat to do, no matter how much palm rolling etc they just go back to the way they were, which is only slightly matted hair. Is this norm? should they just fix themselves? i have elastic bands on the ends of all of them, could this be the problem? im kinda worried bout takin them off cause their all thts holdin em together... so any suggestions would be more than welcome, cheers
p.s. if any one can tell me how to post a pic i will do so, it says myn are to large???

you need to upload your photo with something like http://www.imageshack.us

when you get dreads you are letting your hair do what it wants, you have to relax, your hair knows what it's doing.

yup, it's true. backcombed hair has to all come undone before it can dread up nice and tight. Wish I'd known that when backcombing my child's very fine, red hair. It all came undone and for all the trouble we should have just let it go natural in the first place. Backcombing might work for coarser hair, but it did nothing for hers. The only thing that will fix them is time, give it a year or two and you'll have some really nice dreads. :)

Three days? That's not even close to enough time for dreads to form!

Give it time...your hair will do its thing....

I would recomend taking the rubberbands out. In my opinion, they don't help the process at all and basically just look funny. Also, if you're not carefull about how long you leave them in there, they can eventually disintegrate in your hair and then you wind up with nasty rubber funk that will probably be a pain in the ass to get out. Some people say rubber bands are good, but i've never seen any one get good results from wearing them. They just restrict movement, which seems pretty worthless, considering movement is what you want happening.

If you d use rubber bands, use the clear ones that are "ouchless". I separate my dreads and use a loosly tied rubber band to keep them separated until I can work on them. By "loosely tied" i mean make sure you can move the band up and down and so it's not actually hugging the hair.

I made 5 days ago 3 dreads (on the back of my head close to my neck)to myself with the backcomb method however i do have a little problem..All day long they seem just fine, but when I sleep they arent the same. So, when I wake up I backcomb them again, and that's what's happening since I made em,lol..I guess I have to live them alone from what you guys said..

Yeah, like others have said. There are many people on here with only 4 month old dreads that look great already and they simply let them do their thing. You have to watch backcombing more than once, since you might be combing over knotted parts. But yeah, as far as tips to make them form faster. I've had mine for a month and 1/2 and they are starting to get tighter.... You prolly want to wait at least a week after your first backcombing, but from there washing will speed up the locking process, so maybe twice a week from there - some wash every other day...that will help newayz. Also, I sleep with a wool hat on, I think that this has helped as well. Maybe someone else can give some tips. But, yeah, dreadlocks will naturally take their course through time. You just have to be patient.
