I started going to the commemorations in 2000, on the 30th anniversary. Country Joe was there and sang the Fish Cheer. It is a very moving experience. I was in college at the time of the Kent State shootings, so it was my generation that died there, and in Viet Nam. Almost every year now, I get interviewed by a newspaper or by one of the college's journalism students. Guess cause I "look" like someone from that era. The speech from Allison Krause's boyfriend brought me to tears last year. Anyone who is close enough to Kent should make an effort to go at least once.
Rhodes capitalized politically off the turmoil by going out his scheduled campaign trail to make a speech in Kent at the firehouse. There was a primary scheduled on Tuesday May 5th, the day after the shootings. Rhodes was in Kent on May 3rd and made a number of inflammatory remarks. Bob Carpenter is the only one who had an audio recording of the speech Rhodes made in Kent. All of his material has been made available recently in the KSU library. http://speccoll.library.kent.edu/4May70/historyday/historyday.html .
They hide a audio tape for 30+ years . Now figure this = had they really found a wreck UFO how long would the hide this ......? kind a makes you think..
There were legal issues regarding putting the tapes in the KSU library over who owns the rights to the material. The details were finally worked out a couple years ago. Carpenter was very meticulous when it came to recording events. He took his recorder just about everywhere. .
The tapes weren't hidden but there were legal issues to work out before they could be fully turned over to the library. Things happen slowly. The various memorials for the students injured or killed took a couple decades to be implemented. There was also a battle over having the students names on the plaque. .
Ask the library. There are many archives there now including Carpenter's audio recordings. At least they didn't get lost or destroyed. Wiki article about Kent: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings Article about Jackson State: http://www2.kenyon.edu/Khistory/60s/webpage.htm .
