Who loves being poor?

Discussion in 'Random Thoughts' started by Lying in a field, Apr 30, 2006.

  1. I have been poor for about 3 months now and i've never been happier.....I love getting all my things from charity shops and hard rubbish day and buying kangaroo from the market because I can't afford anything else. I'm gonna start fishing soon and maybe diving the dumpsters at the shops near my house.

i hated being poor growing up. collecting cans and bottles just to eat dinner when your 10 isn't fun.

however, it did teach me some valuable lessons

i still would never want to go back to that

  3. Yeah I get you.......I guess the difference is you were 10 and had no other choice. Maybe I should have worded the thread better. Essentially life is best when you lose the unnecessary hunger for $$$

Why buy a $3000 table because it looks good when you can get one for $15 at the Salvation army that does the same job.

Alternatively, why work a few years for a flashy one week $10,000 holiday, when you can travel indefinitely on the bum, or at least keeping your living arrangements simple

    ah i get you now...

yea, true, life for the most part for me, is a lot better when things are simple. i dont' need anything flashy or whatever to be happy.

I don't like being poor. I love money. I have no problem living simply even though I love money. Do I buy expensive shit, sure. Do I spend unnecessarily? Sure. Is there ever a difference in my life when I don't? No.

yeah I'm not really too big of a fan of being broke. I've been there as an adult and really didn't enjoy it too much...I dropped out of school and everyone in my life cut me off financialy and I didn't work so I was kinda SOL...and then went back to school d:

Being on Permanant Disability, Unable to work even part time for extra money, the US Social Security FORCES me to live well below poverty level for the sole reason I am unable to maintain employment and no longer pay income tax.

12-years ago, I brought home in 2-weeks time, what now I am to support myslef on in a Months time. With the yearly cost of living increase in my check, in over 12-years time I still do NOT even make 9K a year. Meds, and
Doctor fees, Healthcare Fees and all run over 2K+ per month easy, so to me being able to afford to buy one black computer ink cartridge a month. is a luxury item to me, next to that I sometimes have enough to 'treat' myself to a name brand quality shampoo on sale. What are to some a toss into the shopping basket, are to some that of a well planned thought out item finally on sale and a manufacturers coupon to go with it, something to be happy and grateful for. Peace.

  8. Again, i'm sorry......I started this thread with little consideration for the REAL poor. I also had no idea it was so bad over there, I live in Australia where the lower class and pension earners are tolerably comfortable.

I think what you may be referring to is broke. Getting by without complication, but no extras.

are you sure about that? have you been in that lower class who you say are "tolerably comfortable" or do you just think you have been...

I hate being strapped for cash constantly. I hate dealing with financial stresses constantly. I haven't had money to spare in years, unless I specifically save up for something. It's stressful. It makes everything else that's mildly stressful far worse. It amplifies everything bad and irritating, because if I want to do a little cathartic shopping I can't, if I want to buy a new cd to listen to and cry to or scream with, I can't. I fucking hate it.

i've been money poor and it totally sucks.

i'd rather have the money and be able to make wise decisions with it. when it comes to a choice between 'my money or my life', i think i've found a healthy balance. i used to be one of those pple who worked overtime whenever i got the chance to (60 to 80 hr weeks were the norm for me). now i'm more than happy working part-time and living a voluntary simplicity type lifestyle, but that's a choice i've made. if i was forced into it, i'd be miserable.

ps, i do make enough money to buy the books i want and to have expensive imported chocolate when i want it, so life is good. :D little luxuries are important to me.

i don't love the inconvenience of poverty but i sure love not having to be ill at ease about what harm what i might otherwise be having to be doing might be causing to the kind of world i still, along with everybody else, have to live in.

that's what it's really all about. not wealth OR sainthood, but the kind of world we all have to live in.

man, i've been pretty goddammed poor. and when it's just me, it's okay. i like being resourceful, free of responsibilities and ties, free to just up and go. however, with my kids, i HATE it. i can't sleep. i can't rest. i had to learn to ask for help (which my mother will relate ad nauseum is not a part of my character). when i was dirt poor, i still had my pride. with my kids, pride was never an option. welfare eats at a soul, it really does, even if it's family assistance and not government assistance. i don't know how anyone can like themselves when they're permanently on the dole.

exactly.. it's no fun telling your kids to go to bed when they are hungry. :( i've had to do that a few times.. (the more i think about that too the madder i get over it. we were living with my mom and she refused to buy us ANY food, i was 8 months pregnant and hungry myself. infact i can remember thinking "i can't wait until i go into labor and have this baby, because they will feed me at the hospital." i even ate a tuna sandwich the night i had her because i was so hungry i didn't care)

gimme a minute or two and i'll think of another reason being poor sucks

yeah, but they really understand, you know? kai will ask for something, or to do something, and i'll say we can't. and she responds in her sweet, tiny little voice "cause we don't have money?" makes me wanna rob a bank.
