I was just wondering if anyone remembers how oldschool hiphop had those dope sirens wailing behind the beat? What happened to that? Rap used to be soo much better in the 90s............

Early hip hop had a lot to do with the african american community being fed up with the way they were being treated by the gov't and society in general, much like the hippies. They made their voices heard through music much like lennon and dylan did, it's too bad that it ended up being all about money and fame.

One of the coolest guys I know listens to Hip-Hop. But he is one of the coolest poeple to hang out with and he befriends almost everyone he meets, but also speaks his mind about everything, to everyone, under any circumstance. Really interesting guy, actually.

im not wrong thats what immediately came to my head after reading what ya wrote. no matter where you live theres always going to be different people who are into different things then you especially music, obviously. They blast their music cause its their way of expressing themselves. Im sure people give you weird looks for blasting the shit you listen to, you just dont know about it. I guess all im sayin is respect other peoples interest in music.

are you familiar with talib kwali? blackalicious? Sweatshop Union? tribe called quest? the fugees? K-Os? the Beastie boys?

excuse me while I turn up the volume, and strain my ears for the hate...

...nope sorry, it's not there, just some fine MCs goin on a lyrical flow, creating something which goes far beyond words and resonates through me to the core

the only one I see hatin here is you my friend, hating on entire genre of music which I'm gussing you know nothing about, beyond the commericialised gangsta smut you hear on the radio

And pray tell, what is 'hippy music'? Most folks tend to look on me as a 'hippy' (not one for titles myself) and if I had one word to describe my musical taste it would be ecclectic. From hip-hop to bluegrass my friend, all music has a common root, a common language, and when you dig past the comodified sounds you'll find something very real, true, and expressive, in every genre.

Theres a lot of Old hip hop thats not about hate,,, some of the new stuff too.. but most of the new stuff coming out is all about how much money they have and how many chicks they can screw and so on ... really sad how some of these new artists turned it into a contest to see who can get the richest.

    air raid siren #108
    los angeles, ca

Over 200 civil defense air raid sirens were built in Los Angeles from wwii through the cold war. Designed to provide audible early warnings of enemy air attacks, the sirens operated for over 40 years before being abandoned in the 1980’s. The generalized warning of the air-raid siren was made obsolete by the implementation of the emergency broadcast system which could broadcast through tv and radio networks with specfic instructions in case of a natural or man-made disaster. Following September 11th, the Los Angeles city council proposed reactivating the sirens, fearing that commercial broadcast systems might fail in a terrorist attack, that idea was abandoned. This photographic survey document some of the original air raid sirens remaining on the streets of Los Angeles.
