any of you out there? im new to his writing, but think i want to write like him... was looking for reccommendations on classical literature similar to his style or genre.... So far I've been reccommended Beowulf and Gilgamesh type stuff.. read those in humanities class and was bored... funny though i just discovered i am a writer and might try again
If you like how Salvatore depicts Drizzt, it's likely you sympathize to some degree. I've always found that writing like yourself results in the best stuff. Don't imitate styles, writers or characters. Write from your heart and then you'll be happy no matter what. If the Drizzt character is echoed in your depths, you'll write like him. (which explains him resounding so clearly with you). Don't expect to be just like something you've read, you won't be. And that's good. I too like Salvatore's Drizzt. His journal entries allow for a lot of characterization. I reccomend simply developing characters more in your own mind and on paper before putting them into any kind of narrative. The more you know about them, the more subtelties are included in your stories.
It may seem odd, but try F. Scott Fitzgerald. This Side of Paradise or The Great Gatsby. Salvatore's good, but Fitzgerald will take you a bit deeper and help you develop your writing even more.
QFE! Someday I'll read the Drizzt stuff, just so I add a bit more credibility when I smack the multitudes of RPG gamers out there that think it's cool to name themselves after him. And while R.A. is a better pulp writer than most, comparing him to classic liturature makes me cringe.
I try not to read things by him...I'd hate to be playing WoW and see a million in one dryzzts etc etc....Though I have seen a guy named dmdm
