Ever since the announcement of the impending(well here now)creepy spawn of Tomcat appeared, Scientology has been thrust into the spotlight. Everything from the denial of PPD to silent births has been debated, however, the most disturbing thing I've been learning about this "religion" is the advocating against breastfeeding. Instead, opting for a beverage made of barley water(blech) whole COWS milk(that should not even be given to any infant under a year) and either corn syrup or honey. Honey??? Doesn't honey have a huge warning about it because infants can die of botulism?

With all the hype, I have noticed little activity by the pro-breastfeeding groups and pediatricians speaking out against the use of both whole cow milk and honey.

With Scientology growing and the vast number of impressionable young people joing, couldn't this become catastrophic in terms of infant heath and care?

Do some screaming and put my mind at ease!

It's something( cough*cult*cough) started by a science fiction writer named L. Ron Hubbard. He wrote that godawful mess called Battlefield Earth that later became an even worse movie staring John Travolta.

He decided to create his own religion based on the idea that humans were dropped here by alien overlords and that we are all part of the same soul...or whatever. Like reincarnation, we are born over and over again. Someday the mothership with the main overlord Xenu will return and take us back.

I think you get the idea. They have this whole thing about engrams(sp?) and how they have to purged from our systems through scientology purfication rituals.

They tend to scoff at medical treatments like surgery and chemo, they apparently don't breastfeed because modern women's milk is "musty". And I'm sure everyone is familiar with their stance on the existance of mental illness.

Basically, they believe the words of some certifiable and mediochre writer over all proven medical, scientific, and historical facts of learned PH.Ds.

in addition to what cynical otter says, the other dangerous parts are, that they charge tremendous fees for their purification rituals, and once you're in, it's extremely difficult to leave. They are involved in things like drug rehab, but what they are doing is replace the drug dependency with a dependency on cult.
The purification rituals are more of the brainwashing type then anything else....

Judginh from everything I know, and what otter said, this cult can become extremely dangerous.

Honey is empty with absolutly no nutritional value. It is absorbed directly into the blood stream, like alcohol, causing your pancreas to overproduce insulin to fight of the empty sugar that has overwhelmed your body. All the excessive insulin floating around in your body causes lower blood sugar than when you started and could potentially cause you to go into a coma or die

Between TomKat feeding their babe this crap wacky almond milk honey shit and Brooke Shields with her ridiculous, money hungry, "very best baby", I hate her, formula ads....we can only wait to see which child ends up more f-ed up. Golly Brook, it sure is good you get a lifetime supply of formula so you can increase your risk of postpartum depression by not breastfeeding so you can concentrate on how much money your NEXT book will make.

What is going on in the world?!?!?!

***Sigh****and they say Britney is pregnant again. Please stop breeding you wackos.

Otter, do you have any links to their antibreastfeeding ideas? I couold share with some other LCs and maybe talk to some people at LLL. LLL does NOT like to get involved in "religious" actions at all, but at least the leaders would know what to look for, as when Ezzo was so popular.

Tiffany, wow, I didn't know all that. (I never read Hollywood stuff, maybe I should.) Honey is awful for babies. Botulism is a killer. Cow's milk ain't much better. Sheesh. Why are these people BREEDING?

    Thank in advance, Otter. :)

    Scientology's Volunteer Minister's Handbook:

Breast feeding babies may have a nostalgic background, particularly to a Freudian oriented medico, but real breast milk again is usually a poor ration. Modern mothers smoke and sometimes drink. Smoking makes the milk very musty. Anyway, a nervous modern mother just can't deliver the right ration. Maybe it's the pace of the times or the breed, but there are few modern Guernsey-type mothers. So even without drinking or smoking, one should forget breast feeding.
    ...

The foremost reason a baby doesn't do well is poor rations. And to remedy that, here is a formula one can use:

    15 ounces of barley water
    10 ounces of homogenized milk
3 ounces of corn syrup (As the Romans had honey, 2 ounces of honey may be used instead of corn syrup, if desired. Do not use lactose [a sugar found in milk, used in infant foods] as a substitute.) The amount of syrup should be varied - depending on the baby - some like it weak - some take it stronger.

Here is Scientology's Scriptural Bulletin Processing a new mother

The most to know about the baby is not to tire him or her unduly for a week or so, feed a protein formula if mother not breast feeding. This formula is most like human milk. I picked it up in Roman days and have used it since -- 15 ounces of barley water, 10 ounces of homogenized milk, 3 ounces Karo syrup (this can be multiplied by any number according to the number of bottles desired but the ratio remains the same). Evaporated or condensed milk and heavy sugar make fat not bone. *Protein* is the thing that heals and makes strong growth. Modern hospital formulas and patent mixes for babies are not just bad, they are criminal.

Home made forumla is a sin, IMO. If breastfeeding isn't possible, standard forumla should be used. Their ideas about "protein" are right out of the 50s. Too much protien will place undue stress on the baby's kidneys. There were children in the 70s who were given a "home made" high protein formula, and there was also one (breifly) put out by a few of the formula companies. Many babies ended up with kidney damage, some on dialysis and others actually needed transplants. If I am not mistaken, there were even a few deaths.

Absolute bullshit! I am SCARED of these people. Musty? WTF? "Nervous" mother make milk just fine. I wouldn't have had a DROP or my kids would have starved if that were true. I'm a spaz.

Those people are nuts. Their grasp of nutrion is 50 to 100 years outdated.

Hey Maggie, people pretty much showed you the exerpts from the same sources...

Ron L. Hubbard(I switched it before..lol..sorry) was a serious wackadoo and it's disturbing that people are buying this is a legit faith.

I'm trying to find the video or transcription but apparantly, Leah Remini(of King of Queens) has been getting very vitrolic about breastfeeding during some interviews. People ask her if she's breast feeding and she replies quite rudely and snappishly

"Of course not. I'm a Scientologist." Apparently, only us dirty heathens breastfeed our children.

Unfortunately, (from what I've heard) other religions (***cough***cults***) do the same thing. I saw a news story thing about a baby who died and the mother was tried for it's death by starvation, and it turned out that her husband and the group "spiritual leader" (***ahhheemmmm***head wacko in charge****) would only let her feed the baby almond milk, which is the water from boiling almonds (?) and wouldn't allow breastfeeding. I have heard these same type of "rumors" floating around about other cults too. So sad.

Oh, I know about Brooke Shields v. TomKitten only because my job requires me to watch the news all night. And because of my personal vendetta against Shields for glamorizing artificial baby milk.

blech, this scientology stuff is stupid....

I hate to attempt to defend them, but I did see part of that interview he had with diane sawyer, and he was saying how he and katie have this "b&b" thing: she breastfeeds, he burps.....don't know if he's telling the truth, but yeah......
I had heard before that they weren't planning on bfing, so that came as a surprise to hear that.
Formula should only be avaliable through a doc's prescription if the mother can't bf......

and yes, britney spears is pregnant again.....*shudders*......she picked a lovely time to realse the news, too....right after she drops sean on his poor head......some people really shouldn't be allowed to procreate......

    Oh my God

Am all for 'religious tolerance', but not if it means babies could die of malnutrition in the name of some fucked theory.
Makes me fear for the future of humanity ... and pro-choice.

scientology is the ultimate multi-level-marketing scam. They are selling happiness and salvation, at highly inflated prices. You can't go up the ranks without donating millions of dollars to the organization. But who gets to decide if you are happy? They do, of course! With some sort of e-meter gizmo that measures your emotional health. No money back guarantee.
